Old NM prison serving as backdrop to 'Geronimo' (AP)

SANTA FE, N.M. ? Set builders for "Code Name: Geronimo" are putting together a replica of Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan at an old New Mexico state penitentiary as filming begins this week.

The Voltage Productions film will tell the story of the manhunt for bin Laden, with executive producer Tony Mark saying it will focus on the imagined dynamics of the special group of Navy SEALs that carried out the raid and the decision-making processes that might have taken place in Washington.

Mark, who also produced the "The Hurt Locker," tells The New Mexican ( http://bit.ly/AwaTMV) all local filming should be done by the end of February. He says he's moving quickly to get the film in theaters while last spring's event in Pakistan remains fresh in Americans' minds.

Following the raid, the use of the name "Geronimo" in the operation drew angry criticism from many Native Americans, who felt it disrespected the revered Apache warrior's legacy.

Israel: New subsidies don't apply to settlements (AP)

JERUSALEM ? New financial incentives designed to lure Israelis to poorer, outlying areas have been revised to exclude West Bank settlements, officials said Thursday.

A government announcement about the Cabinet decision earlier this week identified some 550 communities that qualified for the subsidies, including 70 West Bank settlements. Many of them are deep inside the West Bank, the heartland of what the Palestinians hope will be an independent state.

In the original announcement, the government said the subsidies are "meant to encourage positive migration to these communities."

But hours after Sunday's vote, the Cabinet held a second vote by telephone to exclude the settlements from the measure, at least in the short run. Although the settlements still appear on the list, the government vote said granting them incentives would be "contingent on a decision by political leaders."

"The government decision on Sunday does not apply to communities in the West Bank," said spokesman Mark Regev. There was no guarantee that approval would not be granted in the future.

The initial Israeli decision drew Palestinian condemnations and demands from the U.S. for an explanation. The visiting U.N. secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, also criticized Israeli settlements at a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday.

At a news conference with Ban, Netanyahu denied caving in to international pressure by removing the settlements from the list. He said the initial Cabinet decision was a mistake, and "we corrected it immediately."

Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem are at the heart of the current impasse in Mideast peace efforts. The Palestinians claim both areas, captured by Israel in 1967, for a future state and say the settlements are making that increasingly difficult.

The Palestinians say they will not return to the negotiating table without a halt to settlement construction. Israel calls that an unacceptable precondition.

Mitt Romney Sings America the Beautiful, Awkwardness Ensues

Mitt Romney looking stiff, forced and a little awkward? There's a stunner!

We kid, Mitt. While we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, as the GOP presidential hopeful reminds us, most of us are not endowed with singing abilities.

In that respect, Mitt Romney ... He's just like us!

The Republican often delves into a monologue on the campaign trail about the greatness of America as seen through the lyrics of "America the Beautiful."

In Iowa, for instance, he said that the "amber waves of grain" were corn; in Florida, he tied the "spacious skies" to the state's role in space exploration.

Typically, Romney will talk-sing the lyrics, but he must have had a second cup of coffee this week, as he actually burst into song in The Villages, Fla.

The crowd of mostly senior citizens  sang along. The press, drummed into submission by most campaign speeches, wondered, "Was this happening?"

It was, and on the Tonight Show last night, Michelle Obama described Romney’s singing as “beautiful” and said the song should be sung by everyone.

Classy lady. But can Mitt hold a candle to Barack singing Al Green?!

Who's the better singer of these 2012 candidates?

Practical Tips For Buying Residential Real Estate | Things You ...

If you want to have a good return on your property, try to do some remodeling. The value of your property will go up quickly. The increase in value can sometimes be substantially more than your investment.

Research rental properties. If you want to buy some rental property, do not buy it until you have looked at the rental records for two years. If you don?t thoroughly read a property?s past records, you won?t have an accurate idea about the income you?re likely to earn from renting out the property. You will also need to prove your lender that this is a good investment.

When deciding on an agent, it is important to have a list of questions already planned out. Ask all of the important questions, like how many houses they have helped to sell this last year, and what is the number of homes they sold that are in the area you are looking at? They should answer every question professionally.

You can request that the seller help out with closing costs or sweeten the deal with other financial incentives when you make your offer on the house you have in mind. For example, you could ask for a seller to buy down your interest rates for a limited period of time. However, if you add financial incentives to the offer, a seller will be less likely to negotiate the selling price.

If a seller refuses your offer, try to make compromises and negotiate with them. Such possibilities include offering to cover your closing costs or even do some upgrades and repairs to the property prior to your taking up residence.

Use caution when purchasing a home if your current employment is in jeopardy. Putting your signature on the mortgage means that, regardless of events, you are solely responsible for your payments. In case of an interruption in your job, you will need to have a few moths of payments saved up.

It is not necessary to buy a home that has more than one fireplace unless the climate calls for it. All you need is one fireplace in the family room. It is a real hassle to keep up with cleaning multiple fireplaces and they are rarely used anyway.

Do your homework on your target area. You need to check with certain websites that can tell you about the average prices of foreclosed homes, listings, and backlogs as well. Other things you may want to investigate are local unemployment rates, income levels and schools. Very rarely can an extremely nice property outweigh an the impact of an area that has been hit hard by the economy, so be careful.

If you hire a real estate appraiser, you want to make sure they have experience, preferably at a minimum of five years. It is not a good idea to engage an appraiser that a real estate company recommends. This might represent a possible conflict of interest. State agencies regulate all appraisers, so check your appraiser?s license or certifications before hiring him.

There are many calculators available online to help you figure out how much you can afford to pay for a new house. These tools allow you to input how much money you make, your daily expenses and any debt that you have. This will allow you to get a realistic idea of what you really can afford, making sure you do not set yourself up to spend more than you should.

Get a professional to look at the building you want to buy. Don?t be tempted to allow a friend or relative to do the home inspection in order to avoid having to pay a professional. Professionals must stand behind their inspection. Someone doing the inspection as a favor couldn?t be held liable for costs you incur because of something they missed.

Adopting the right approach to the market is the key to a successful purchase. Be properly informed on how to gain a good advantage and position. This article has provided you with helpful information, so use it! The ball is now in your court.

Filmmaker arrested during House hearing on shale gas (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The director of a U.S. documentary that portrays shale gas production as dangerous was arrested and escorted out of a Republican-dominated Congressional hearing on Wednesday, touching off a dispute over public access to the event.

Police handcuffed Josh Fox, director of the Oscar-nominated Gasland, and led him out of a House science committee room after he refused to stop filming.

Republicans in charge of the committee said Fox lacked credentials to tape the hearing, which was being broadcast live on the Internet.

The hearing focused on an Environmental Protection Agency draft report that found an aquifer in Wyoming was likely polluted by fluids from hydraulic fracturing, the drilling technique scrutinized in Fox's controversial documentary.

U.S. Representative Brad Miller, the top Democrat on a science subcommittee, objected to the decision to eject Fox. He said Republicans had also blocked an ABC News crew from filming the hearing because they had not requested to film in advance.

"All those rules are to control access," said Miller, who made a motion that "all God's children" be allowed to film the hearing.

Miller's move delayed the hearing for nearly 50 minutes until the required number of lawmakers were present to vote on the motion.

The documentary has garnered particular attention for a scene featuring flaming tapwater. Shale gas supporters have said the film is filled with inaccuracies and distorts the safety record of U.S. shale gas production.

Congressman Maurice Hinchey, a Democrat who has been pushing for more oversight of shale gas production, called Fox's arrest "beyond unacceptable".

"This is blatant censorship and a shameful stain on this Congress," Hinchey said in a statement.

Shale gas output has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to advances in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. While innovations have sharply boosted production of U.S. natural gas, critics say the rapidly expanding development threatens drinking water and public health.

Since the release of Gasland, Fox has become a high-profile opponent of fracking, joining efforts to prevent drilling in the Delaware River Basin and working to get water to families in Dimock, Pennsylvania, who say their water has been tainted by drilling.

When the House hearing resumed, Republicans, who strongly support the natural gas drilling, accused the EPA of basing its findings in Wyoming on politics and not science.

"In its single-minded pursuit of the hydraulic fracturing smoking gun, EPA appears to have lost focus on identifying the real causes and real solutions to drinking water quality problems in Pavillion, Wyoming," said Andy Harris, the top Republican on the subcommittee.

The EPA defended its work in Pavillion. EPA region 8 administrator Jim Martin stressed that its study was conducted under rigorous standards and the findings were limited to the unique geology in Pavillion and not meant to be applied to other places where drilling is occurring.

"EPA has acted carefully, thoughtfully, deliberately, and transparently in our ground water investigation and in sharing the data and findings contained in our draft report," Martin said.

Fla. highway patrol defends reopening I-75 (AP)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? Minutes before two pileups killed 10 people on a highway shrouded in fog and thick smoke from a brush fire, the Florida Highway Patrol had reopened the always busy six-lane interstate after an earlier serious accident.

A sergeant and lieutenant determined after about three hours that conditions had cleared enough for drivers, but visibility quickly became murky again, officials said Monday.

"We went through the area. We made an assessment. We came to the conclusion that the road was safe to travel and that is when we opened the road up," Highway patrol spokesman Lt. Patrick Riordan said in a news conference. "Drivers have to recognize that the environment changes. They have to be prepared to make good judgments."

At least a dozen cars, six tractor-trailers and a motorhome collided at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday. Some cars were crushed under the bellies of big rigs. Others burst into flames and sent metal shrapnel flying through the air, horrifying witnesses watching the violence along Interstate 75 in calls to 911. Eighteen survivors were hospitalized.

In a 911 recording released Monday, a driver and her passengers told a dispatcher that the fog and smoke from the 62-acre brush fire was so thick they couldn't see.

"I think there was another accident behind us because I heard it," a woman said. "Oh my gosh, it's so dark here."

Late Monday, the highway patrol said seven people died and at least 16 people were injured after 10 vehicles crashed in the northbound lanes of the highway, the first of two multiple-vehicle pileups along I-75.

The vehicles crashed about 4 a.m. after driving in heavy smoke that made it hard to see. Jason Lee Raikes, 26, of Richmond, Va., died in the crash, authorities said.

They also said five out of six people riding in a 2012 Dodge Caravan died in the crash: Driver Edson Carmo, 38; Roselia DeSilva, 41; Jose Carmo Jr., 43; Adrianna Carmo, 39; and Leticia Carmo, 17; all of Kennesaw, Ga. The highway patrol did not immediately provide the identity of the seventh crash fatality.

Jose and Adriana Carmo were married and Leticia was their daughter, said Arao Amazonas, senior pastor at their church, the Igreja Internacional de Restauracao, or International Church of the Restoration.

The van's sixth occupant, the couple's younger daughter, Lidiane, 15, survived the crash, Amazonas said. A hospital spokeswoman said Monday afternoon that she was listed in critical condition.

Amazonas had been at a religious conference in Florida with the family and many others since Thursday. He said he spoke with the pastor before the family left Florida on Saturday night and urged him to wait until morning, he said. But Carmo told him he wanted to be back in time for the Sunday morning service.

The Carmos were in one van and other church members were in a second van. The passengers of that van called Amazonas after the accident to tell him what happened, he said.

About 100 people gathered Monday evening at the suburban Atlanta church, which caters to the local Brazilian community, to mourn the deaths of their fellow church members. People at the gathering wailed and wept as Amazonas addressed them in Portuguese.

"We couldn't have imagined such tragedy would come to us," Amazonas said.

Riordan declined to release the names of the two troopers who made the decision or provide details on how long they had been with the patrol. He said no troopers have been disciplined but the investigation into the crash continues. National Transportation Safety Board officials said Monday they are sending investigators to the scene. Gov. Rick Scott also called for an investigation.

In the same 911 call, another woman took the phone and screamed an expletive as she hears another crash.

"That was a truck. We cannot see. It's like impossible to see," the caller said. "The smoke is very thick you can see obviously only your hand in front. I do hear an ambulance or police officer coming down the road."

Hours later, twisted, burned-out vehicles were scattered across the pavement, with smoke still rising from the wreckage. Cars appeared to have smashed into the big rigs and, in one case, a motor home. Some cars were crushed beneath the heavier trucks.

Reporters who were allowed to view the site saw bodies still inside a burned-out Grand Prix. One tractor-trailer was burned down to its skeleton, charred pages of books and magazines in its cargo area. And the tires of every vehicle had burned away, leaving only steel belts.

The Florida Forest Service said Monday it still had not determined if the fire was intentionally set or accidental, although lightning has been ruled out. Spokeswoman Ludie Bond said the fire is contained but was still burning. Firefighters are spraying water around its perimeter attempting to reduce the smoke.

Criminal defense attorneys said that if the fire was caused by arson, authorities likely will file charges of manslaughter and possibly felony murder, which is defined as a death that happens as result of participating in a felony.

"You can bet they will be," said Brian Tannebaum, a former president of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
