Thoughts on gaming consoles - WCReplays.com Community Forums

Well we know there will be at least one more cycle. Just speculating, say the next Xbox (or other next generation console) comes out in 2014. That would suggest that next generation would be due around 2020. By then who knows what kind of technology will be available, so I would say there is a good chance you're right.

It's easy for a PC gamer to say all games should be on PC, but the consoles are more available. They are cheaper and more convenient, and appeal to casual gamers. I think there will always be a market for at least some form of console gaming (played on your TV). One could hope for consolidation, as it's not like Sony or Microsoft have anything to lose from a computer/console hybrid, but as long as separate companies can make a profit, I find it hard to believe that they will come out with a true all-in-one system for some time.

Also I imagine the next generation consoles will essentially be computers that plug in to your TV. I'm sure they will have web browsing, as well as many other advanced features and programs (Kinect, for instance) that will allow them to do much more than the consoles of today.
