7 Tips for Making a Home Inventory this Winter

Do you have the winter time blues? Cabin fever? Looking for a way to pass the time? Why not take a few minutes if you?re stuck inside this winter to make a home inventory? If disaster strikes or your home is burglarized and your belongings are destroyed or stolen, a home inventory makes the insurance claims process a lot simpler. Being able to provide a detailed home inventory to a claims adjuster can help you and your insurance company settle on a fair amount for your belongings and it helps you get your possessions replaced quicker. Creating a home inventory doesn?t have to be completely daunting. Here are a few tips for compiling your home inventory:

1. Details, details, details. A home inventory includes a comprehensive list of all your belongings, along with receipts (if you have them), photos, and descriptions. For items such as electronics be sure to record the serial number of the item.
2. Divide and conquer. Instead of making one long list of your items, break it down by room and/or type of item, such as clothing, heirlooms, electronics, and jewelry. This will make the home inventory less overwhelming and decrease the chances that you?ll overlook something.
3. Know what your stuff is worth. If you have antiques, family heirlooms, or other valuables that don?t have receipts, you may want to have them appraised in order to determine their value.
4. Don't forget to check the attic. When taking your inventory, make sure you don?t overlook items that are stored in the closet, drawers, attic, or garage. Bicycles, holiday decorations, and sports equipment may be out of sight, but their cost adds up. Make sure you include everything ? even if it?s in storage ? on your list.
5. Add it up. Once you have a full document of all your belongings, along with their values, add up all the items in your home and their total cost.
6. Keep it safe. Store your complete home inventory with your insurance policy in a safe, easily accessible place, such as a fireproof box, safe deposit box, or other secure location. Technology today also makes it possible to keep your home inventory digitally using cloud storage.

7. Take stock annually. Remember to review and update your inventory each year, or whenever you make a significant purchase, to ensure your new items are documented.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Bruce Willis remains a die-hard at the box office.

Willis' action sequel "A Good Day to Die Hard" debuted as the weekend's top draw with a $25 million debut from Friday to Sunday. The 20th Century Fox release raised its domestic total to $33.2 million since opening Thursday for Valentine's Day to get a jump on the long President's Day weekend.

The movie comes 25 years after the original "Die Hard" and six years after "Live Free or Die Hard," the hit that resurrected the franchise centered on Willis' relentless New York City cop John McClane.

The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Universal's comedy "Identity Thief" starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, was a close second with $23.4 million to lift its haul to $70.7 million.

Debuting at No. 3 with $21.4 million was Relativity Media's romance "Safe Haven," starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel in an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel about a woman who flees her abusive husband and takes up with a sensitive widower. Since opening on Valentine's Day, "Safe Haven" has taken in $30.3 million.

The Weinstein Co. animated tale "Escape from Planet Earth" opened at No. 4 with $16.1 million. With a voice cast that includes Brendan Fraser, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker and Rob Corddry, the movie follows the adventures of aliens captured by the U.S. military.

Making a weak debut at No. 6 was the Warner Bros. teen fantasy "Beautiful Creatures," which pulled in $7.5 million for the weekend and $10 million since opening Thursday. The movie is based on the first in the best-selling series about a Southern misfit (Alden Ehrenreich) who falls under the spell of a teen witch (Alice Englert).

"A Good Day to Die Hard" did solid business despite bad reviews for the latest installment, which sends Willis' McClane to Moscow in search of his estranged son, an undercover spy who winds up teaming with the old man against Russian bad guys.

The movie's success follows notable flops from two other holdovers of the 1980s action scene, Sylvester Stallone with "Bullet to the Head" and Arnold Schwarzenegger with "The Last Stand."

"There's still life left in the 'Die Hard' franchise. Given the fact that pretty much every other R-rated action movie that's come out this year has completely fallen flat, this is a pretty good showing," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. Willis is "one of the old-guard action stars who still has a solid career going, whereas a lot of these aging action heroes, unless they're in an ensemble cast, they're not able to draw audiences the way they used to."

Overall Hollywood business remained slow, with revenues off for the fourth-straight weekend compared to the same period last year. Domestic business from Friday to Sunday totaled $141 million, down 9.4 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when "Safe House" and "The Vow" led the way with about $23 million each.

A bright spot this year has been strong business for top Academy Awards contenders leading up to next Sunday's Oscars. The weekend's top-20 films included eight of the nine best-picture nominees, seven of which have either topped $100 million domestically or are close.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

Watch an asteroid buzz past us ... online

Half the size of a football field, the massive asteroid known as 2012 DA14 will pass about 17,000 miles above Earth traveling five miles per second. Scientists at NASA will be taking radar imagery to learn more and eventually help avoid impact from future asteroids. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

The best way for most of us to watch asteroid 2012 DA14 come within 17,200 miles of Earth on Friday, and then recede harmlessly into the cosmos, is to fire up your Web browser and watch the show online. Pictures of the space rock, which is about half the length of a football field, are already starting to roll in.

NASA's experts on near-Earth objects say that the time of closest approach will come at 2:25 p.m. ET, when the asteroid is zooming above the eastern Indian Ocean at a speed of almost 17,500 mph (7.8 kilometers per second). It'll be too dim to see with the naked eye, but observers in Australia, Asia and Europe might be able to follow it with binoculars or small telescopes if they know exactly where to look. (If you want to try it, follow the directions at the bottom of this item.)

Then there are the professionals: Astronomers around the world are tracking 2012 DA14 with optical telescopes and radar dishes to learn more about the asteroid's color, shape, spin and reflectivity. Such data could tell them what the object is made of, and perhaps provide insights into how similar objects could be diverted if they were on a threatening course. Which this one is not.

Experts estimate that asteroids the size of 2012 DA14 hit our planet every 1,200 years or so, exploding with the energy of a 2.5-megaton atomic bomb: The last such impact struck a remote region of Siberia without warning in 1908, flattening 820 square miles of forest. If an object that big were to hit in just the wrong place, it could wipe out a city. Coincidentally, a much smaller meteoroid came down over Russia on Friday, sparking a fireball and a glass-shattering shock wave.

Even though the 150-foot-wide (45-meter-wide) asteroid is the biggest object of its kind to be seen coming this close to Earth, its orbit is so well-known that NASA's Near-Earth Object Program can rule out any chance of collision in the foreseeable future. And even though 2012 will fly 5,000 miles closer than satellites in geosynchronous orbit, NASA says its mostly south-to-north orbital path goes through a "sweet spot" that keeps it far away from those satellites ??as well as from other spacecraft that are in closer orbits, including the International Space Station.

Thus, astronomers don't expect to see anything go boom on Friday. But they could pick up on some subtler phenomena, such as seismic disturbances in the asteroid that are induced by Earth's gravitational kick, or characteristics of the asteroid's spin that are affected by radiation absorption and emission.

Radar readings provide the best way to get a fix on the asteroid's shape and spin, in part because observations from multiple radio telescopes can be combined to produce a clearer picture. During 2012 DA14's flyby, radio telescopes in California, New Mexico and Puerto Rico will be tracking the asteroid. NASA's 230-foot (70-meter) dish at Goldstone, Calif., is expected to collect radar imagery good enough to produce a 3-D movie mapping the space rock from all sides.

Other telescopes, spread out from Australia to Israel to the Canary Islands to the U.S., will be gathering optical data ? and the images from some of those telescopes will be shared on Friday. Here's the viewing schedule:

Noon ET: NASA plans to start streaming near-real-time?imagery of the asteroid's flyby, as provided by telescopes in Australia and Europe, weather permitting. Watch JPL video on Ustream.

2 p.m. ET:?To mark the time of closest encounter, NASA will present a half-hour program with commentary from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The show will feature computer animations as well as any live or near-real-time imagery that becomes available from telescopes in Australia. 3:15 p.m. ET: The Bareket Observatory in Israel says it will air a three-hour webcast featuring imagery from the flyby. Static images of the asteroid and its celestial surroundings will be refreshed every 30 to 60 seconds. Watch Bareket's webcast.

A new study suggest helping with the dishes, rather than giving roses, may be a better way to enhance a 21st century relationship.

While this may seem sacrilegious after Valentine?s Day, the new Open University study finds that the things that keep couples together often include small acts of compasssion.

Researchers discovered simple acts of kindness ranging from taking out the trash to bringing a cup of coffee to?bed, to telling someone they look good naked, are cited as relationship savers by the 4,000-plus adults in the UK who took part in the Enduring Love online survey.

Researchers say the results from the survey on couple relationships showed a whole host of ways that participants described how their partner makes them feel appreciated and loved, with simply saying ?thank you? and thoughtful gestures being prized most highly.

Participants also noted plenty of irritations they felt in their relationships. Grumbles such as snoring, noisy eating and stacking the dishwasher badly might lead one to think a Valentine?s card would be unceremoniously tossed, yet these were all part and parcel of ongoing 21st century relationships.

Among the findings, the survey revealed that non-heterosexual parents do more relationship maintenance than their heterosexual counterparts and indeed, lesbian and gay participants were shown to be more positive and happier with their relationship and with their partner in general.

There were, however, no significant differences between heterosexual and non-heterosexual participants in their happiness with life.

Researchers discovered mothers are more negative about relationship quality, relationship with partner, relationship maintenance and happiness with relationship/partner than childless women. But?mothers are significantly happier with life that any other group, indicating that children could perhaps be the primary source of happiness for women.

Mothers are also almost twice more likely than fathers to say that their children are the most important people in their life.

Fathers are much more likely than mothers to value their partners as the most important person. The survey also revealed how sharing values, a faith, beliefs or interests with a partner is very highly regarded and participants expressed disappointment when the everyday experiences of life could not be shared.

?Holding things in common was seen by participants as a key ?connector? in the couple relationship,? said Janet Fink, Ph.D., co-lead researcher on the Enduring Love project.? ?And it was clear that long-term relationships appear to endure through a blend of practical and emotional labor,? she added.

In addition, the survey asked whether a stressful situation (experienced in the last two years) ? such as a house move, bereavement or redundancy ? may have impacted adversely on their relationship.

In fact, responses from participants showed the opposite and suggest that both parents and childless couples might pull together through such difficult life events.

?The more events participants reported, the higher their scores on our three measures of relationship quality, partner relationship and relationship maintenance,? said Jacqui Gabb, Ph.D.,?co-lead researcher on the project.

The study ? which is just past the halfway point ? involves two levels of research, gleaned firstly from an online quantitative survey, completed by 4,212 adults? long-term relationships in the UK. This is complemented by a second strand of qualitative research undertaken with 50 couples, aged between 18 and 65, with children and without.

The overall aim is to develop a picture of what a 21st century long-term relationship looks like and to examine the emotional and practical work that couples do to sustain their relationship.

Researchers were encouraged by the high survey response rate.

?The level of interest in this survey did take us by surprise, but reflects the fascination with the topic of relationships and in ?self-help? culture.

?We found that whilst participants do appear to seek help with their relationship ? whether that is from friends and relations or other professional sources, they are also employing their own methods to keep their relationship on track.?
