Bonnie Raitt preps 1st album in 7 years for April (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Bonnie Raitt is releasing a new album in 2012, her first in seven years.

"Slipstream," out April 10, follows a long break from studio work for the Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member. She lost her parents, her brother and her best friend.

"I hadn't stopped moving in a very long time so I really wanted to take a total break and not concentrate on making a new record or what I was going to do next," Raitt said. "So that was really valuable because I waited until I was really ready to come back."

"Slipstream" is the 62-year-old slide guitarist's first album since 2005's "Souls Alike" and will be the first release on her own record label, Redwing Records. The 12-track album will feature four songs recorded with producer Joe Henry and his musicians, which she describes as experimental. The remainder of the album is self-produced with her touring band.

She says she's thrilled with the resulting eclectic mix of blues, rock and soul that even includes a dash of reggae and Celtic sounds. She covers Bob Dylan's "Million Miles" and "Standing in the Doorway," and Loudon Wainwright III's "You Can't Fail Me Now" as well.

"It's just a new batch of great songs," Raitt said.

Mass grave found in Afghan army compound: officials (Reuters)

DEH DADI, Afghanistan (Reuters) ? A mass grave containing at least 10 human skulls was discovered in northern Afghanistan by construction workers digging the earth to build a car park in an army compound, Afghan officials said on Wednesday.

The discovery of the grave Tuesday in the northern Balkh province in the Deh Dadi district near the site of a major battle during the country's bloody civil war of the early 1990s is yet another reminder of the country's turbulent past.

"We brought 10 to 15 skeletons out of the grave and then stopped digging," said Mohammad Nahim, a spokesman for the Afghan army in the north said.

Nahim added that the army asked forensic and human rights bodies to investigate the grave, where the hands of skeletons, some poking out from dusty sweaters, had been tied behind their backs with blue rope.

The army stopped operating around the grave Wednesday, following a request from the Independent Human Rights Commission, which will investigate when the people were killed, its head Sayed Mohammad told Reuters.

"Soon it will become clear who they were and why they were killed," Nahim added. Army officials estimate that the number of bodies in the grave could be higher.

The grave is some two kilometers (1.2 mile) from Qala-e-Jangi, where the Taliban killed hundreds of resistance fighters led by mujahideen hero Ahmad Shah Massoud.

Soldier denies knowing of explosives in plane bag (AP)

MIDLAND, Texas ? A soldier charged with trying to bring explosives on an airplane in Texas told investigators he used them in Afghanistan but didn't realize any were in a bag he brought back to the U.S. and apparently carried on a flight from North Carolina to Texas.

Trey Scott Atwater, of Hope Mills, N.C., was arrested Saturday while trying to go through security at an airport in Texas where he was planning to fly back home. Authorities say the 30-year-old had a carry-on bag containing C4, a powerful explosive used in Iraq and Afghanistan to blow the hinges off doors or destroy unexploded ordinance.

According to court documents, Atwater told the FBI he is a demolitions expert who returned from his third deployment to Afghanistan in April. He said his Army special forces team always carried at least two blocks of C4, but he didn't know any explosives were in his bag when he returned to his post at Fort Bragg, N.C.

He said the bag had been in his garage since then and he didn't see any explosives in the main compartment when he packed for his trip to Texas.

Atwater was detained at the Fayetteville, N.C., airport on Dec. 24 when security agents found a military smoke grenade in his carry-on bag. Court documents don't specify ? and transportation officials wouldn't say Tuesday ? whether investigators now suspect C4 was in Atwater's bag then or whether he acquired it later.

Atwater did not say where he got the C4, although his comments in court documents indicate he could have brought it from Afghanistan.

After the smoke grenade was confiscated, Atwater was "admonished" and allowed to fly to Texas, court documents said. Typically, bags are thoroughly searched and placed on X-ray machines for a second time after a suspicious item is found, although court documents don't say whether that was done in Atwater's case.

He and his family were returning home when he was stopped at Midland International Airport. A Transportation Security Administration agent spotted a suspicious item in his carry-on during screening, and a police bomb squad identified it as C4.

C4 looks like a block of clay and requires a blasting cap or detonator to explode. Combat troops have ready access to the explosive, which can also be used as fuel for heating water or rations. The U.S. military forbids troops from taking C4 out of combat zones, but the screening process for troops heading home is not as stringent as for people flying on commercial airlines.

Documents do not say how much C4 was in Atwater's bag or whether there were blasting caps.

Atwater has been charged with trying to bring explosives onto an airplane, which carries a maximum 10-year federal prison sentence. He waived his initial court appearance Tuesday, and his attorney, Jason Leach, declined to comment on the case.

The FBI didn't find out about the smoke grenade until after Atwater's arrest in Midland.

"When I asked him about the December 24 Fayetteville incident after TSA informed me of it, Atwater acknowledged that it had occurred, but said he had forgotten to mention it to us during our initial interview," the FBI agent wrote in the affidavit filed in the case.

TSA spokesman Greg Soule declined to comment Tuesday.

No one answered the door Tuesday at the home of Atwater's parents in a quiet middle-class neighborhood in Midland, about 320 miles west of Dallas. An American flag between the two garage doors fluttered in the breeze. Relatives have not spoken publicly since his arrest or returned multiple phone messages requesting comment.

A neighbor who lives two doors down, Pam Moore, 55, said she watched Atwater grow up. She said he was a "wonderful kid" who played high school football.

"We were real proud of him when he joined the military," Moore said. "I feel sorry that he got caught up in this. ... I just hope everything works out for him. I really do."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - "The Descendants," starring George Clooney as a family man, and the silent black and white movie "The Artist," were among 10 movies earning Producers Guild Award nominations on Tuesday.

"Midnight in Paris," Woody Allen's cinematic bow to the French capital, and the surprise summer box office hit "The Help," which tells of black maids in Mississippi dealing with racism, also built upon their nods from other major film awards as the Hollywood awards season gathers momentum.

High-profile names including Martin Scorsese for 3D-adventure movie "Hugo," Brad Pitt for the baseball film "Moneyball," George Clooney for political drama "The Ides of March" and Steven Spielberg for the family film "War Horse" were also nominated for those films, along with their fellow producers.

Completing the list in the main fiction film category were producers for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," adapted from Stieg Larsson's trilogy of hit novels, and the raunchy summer female comedy "Bridesmaids."

The Producers Guild Awards, a key indication of Hollywood sentiment ahead of the Oscars in February, will be handed out at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Jan 21.

In other categories, Spielberg as well as Peter Jackson were nominated for donning their producer hats in the animation category "The Adventures of Tintin."

In a year of numerous Hollywood sequels, "Cars 2," and "Kung Fu Panda 2" also received nods in the animation category along with "Puss In Boots" and western comedy "Rango" in which Johnny Depp lends his voice as a pet chameleon.

The PGA also announced its television movie and mini-series nominees, including HBO's "Too Big To Fail," "Mildred Pierce," and "Cinema Verite," as well as "Downton Abbey" (PBS) and "The Kennedys" (ReelzChannel.)

And theatrical documentaries "Senna," which thrilled audiences with its portrait of the late Brazilian Formula One champion Ayrton Senna, and "Bill Cunningham New York" about the aging, modest New York Times fashion photographer will compete against "Project Nim" and Cameron Crowe's "The Union" about Elton John's collaboration with Leon Russell.

"Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest," about the influential American hip hop group rounded out the theatrical documentary list.

The Producers Guild producer awards, will be handed out two days after the Writers Guild honors. Hollywood's guilds represent professionals in their respective industries.

SKorea president open to NKorea nuclear talks

-- South Korea's president urged North Korea on Monday to embrace a "new era" by using its recent leadership change as an opportunity to transform Korean ties, as Seoul signaled its willingness to work with Pyongyang's new leader.

Lee Myung-bak is reaching out to the late Kim Jong Il's young son as he takes power as supreme commander of the North's military and ruling party leader after Kim's death last month. Lee, however, also warned that Seoul would respond sternly to any North Korean provocations.

Lee's comments in a nationally televised speech came a day after the North said in its annual New Year's message that its citizens should turn themselves into "human shields" to defend Kim Jong Il's son, Kim Jong Un, "unto death."

Lee said Kim Jong Il's death is "portending a sea change" for the Korean peninsula. "If North Korea comes forward with a sincere attitude, it will be possible for us to work together to open a new era," he added.

North Korea said last week that it would never deal with Lee, but Kim Jong Un's rise could offer a chance to improve ties that have suffered since Lee took office in 2008 and ended a no-strings-attached aid policy toward the North.

The young Kim had a brief meeting in Pyongyang late last month with a former South Korean first lady and a business leader who were leading private mourning delegations to pay respects to Kim Jong Il.

Lee said the Korean peninsula is at a turning point and "new opportunities always emerge amid such changes."

However, he also said Seoul would "maintain a watertight defense posture" to deal with the possibility of North Korean provocations. "If any aggression occurs, we will strongly respond," Lee said.

In 2010, 50 South Koreans died in attacks blamed on the North, though the Koreas have met in recent months for preliminary nuclear discussions.

North Korea, which has tested two atomic devices since 2006, has said it wants to return to long-stalled six-nation talks on halting its nuclear weapons program in return for aid. Washington and Seoul, however, have insisted that the North first show progress on past disarmament commitments.

If North Korea halts its nuclear activities, Lee said in his speech, negotiations could resume.

"We are ready to resolve security concerns on the Korean peninsula and provide assistance to revive North Korea's economy through agreements in the six-nation talks," Lee said.

Meanwhile, North Korea's propaganda efforts to build up Kim Jong Un continued Monday, with state TV showing footage of him dressed in a dark overcoat and laughing with officers as soldiers applauded during a field inspection Sunday. State TV also played a song widely associated with Kim Jong Un - "Footsteps," a reference to his carrying out his family's legacy.

North Korea's New Year's message Sunday didn't include the country's routine harsh criticism of the United States and avoided the country's nuclear ambitions, a sign the North may be willing to continue talks with Washington to win food aid.

North Korea repeated a call in the message for implementing past agreements for the Koreas to cooperate on potentially lucrative economic projects.

Although North Korea has left open the possibility of better ties with the South, it hasn't tempered its antagonism toward Lee. On Monday, it accused Lee of plotting to shake up the North by temporarily placing his troops on high alert after Kim Jong Il's death. The North's main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said in a commentary that Lee must "kneel down and apologize" for his acts.

Analysts said Lee is willing to move past North Korea's recent strong words. Lee's speech shows South Korea "has no intention to provoke North Korea," said Cheon Seong-whun, an analyst with the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul.

North Korea has regularly criticized Lee since he took office seeking to link aid to progress in North Korea's nuclear disarmament.

The six-nation nuclear talks involve the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan.

The Korean peninsula remains technically in a state of conflict because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

This year is a crucial one for North Korea as it tries to build a "great, prosperous and powerful nation" befitting the April 2012 centenary of the birth of national founder Kim Il Sung, the new leader's grandfather.
