Sexual violence and the church: talking to teens ? WIT

Before Christmas I was asked to talk to some teens in my church about sexual violence.? It was a part of a larger series on sexuality and ethics.? Our conversation (intentionally) centered around healthy, non-violent sexual practices, not on how to deal with having experienced sexual abuse.

?

With that caveat in mind, I am really impressed with how the whole thing was handled.? Instead of repeating over and over again, ?Don?t have sex until you are married,? those running the educational time gave the teens a robust guide for sexually appropriate behavior by explaining that sexual intimacy is only one form of relational intimacy?emotional intimacy, intellectual intimacy, and spiritual intimacy are others.? In healthy (and ethical) relationships, sexual intimacy should never outpace these other forms of intimacy.? When and if it does, you run the risk of objectifying the other person (and just generally getting into a situation that the relationship can?t handle).? And, of course, the teens were told explicitly that oral and anal sex involves a very high level of sexual intimacy on par with (if not higher) than genital-genital or manual-genital sexual activity.?

?

Talking with the teens about sexual violence within the context of this broader discussion of Christian sexuality and intimacy made things a little easier in some ways.? First, the primacy of enthusiastic consent became clearer. ??If sexual activities (with a partner) are most appropriate within a relationship characterized by high levels of emotional, intellectual, and spiritual intimacy, then it makes it easier for the teens to say to me things like, ?you need to talk about sex with your partner!? and ?you need to know what he/she is okay with and not before you get into a heated moment?? (oh yes, they were the ones that came up with those things).? When we talked about the fact that individuals who have been sexually abused in the past may experience difficulty with expressing sexual interest in the moment (and this can be confounding if the other person is trying to determine whether he/she should move forward), they offered that sexual communication can improve if the two individuals keep sharing about their histories and working together to come up with solutions.? And, when it came time for me to voice a rather stern warning that minimums for consent cannot be met when people involved are drunk or high, this was fairly comprehensible.

?

?Yet, placing the issue of sexual violence in this context did not speak to the reality that we are socialized in a wider culture of rape in which the systematic and broad cultural objectification of women is normalized and we come to any sexual activity with skewed expectations about women?s roles and behaviors? (even in the sexual encounter itself).? In addition, the full possibility of rape within intimate relationships isn?t clear in this context (i.e., consent must be given each and every time, previous sexual activity within a relationship does not automatically provide consent for all future sexual encounters). ??Nonetheless, I think it was a good start.

?

The reality of sexual violence is important to discuss and teens, like the rest of us, need to hear that it is a very serious sin.? Yes, sin.? The churches have language to bring to this discussion that secular society does not.? We can talk about gravely harmful behavior without having to resort to legal definitions? and loopholes.? We can claim that sexual activities, in every instance, should embody love and respect for oneself and the other.? The language of sexual activities as an expression of love and respect clearly exposes the misstep that a rape victim could ever be ?asking for it? and the mistake of defining consent exclusively in terms of its minimum requirements.? It is important that we keep talking about sexual violence in church.?

(AP) ? Steroid-tainted stars Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa were denied entry to baseball's Hall of Fame, with voters failing to elect any candidates for only the second time in four decades.

In a vote that keeps the game's career home run leader and one of its greatest pitchers out of Cooperstown ? at least for now ? Bonds received just 36.2 percent of the vote and Clemens 37.6 in totals announced Wednesday by the Hall and the Baseball Writers' Association of America, both well short of the 75 percent necessary. Sosa, eighth on the career home run list, got 12.5 percent.

"Curt Schilling made a good point, everyone was guilty. Either you used PEDs, or you did nothing to stop their use," Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt said in an email to The Associated Press. "This generation got rich. Seems there was a price to pay."

Bonds, Clemens and Sosa were eligible for the first time and have up to 14 more years on the writers' ballot to gain baseball's highest honor.

"After what has been written and said over the last few years I'm not overly surprised," Clemens said in a statement he posted on Twitter.

Craig Biggio, 20th on the career list with 3,060 hits, topped the 37 candidates with 68.2 percent of the 569 ballots, 39 shy of election. Among other first-year eligibles, Mike Piazza received 57.8 percent and Schilling 38.8.

Jack Morris led holdovers with 67.7 percent. He will make his final ballot appearance next year, when fellow pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine along with slugger Frank Thomas are eligible for the first time.

Two-time NL MVP Dale Murphy received 18.6 percent in his 15th and final appearance.

"With 53 percent you can get to the White House, but you can't get to Cooperstown," BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O'Connell said. "It's the 75 percent that makes it difficult."

It was the eighth time the BBWAA failed to elect any players. There were four fewer votes than last year and five members submitted blank ballots.

"It's a tough period for evaluation, that's what this chalks up to," Hall President Jeff Idelson said. "Honestly, I think that any group you put this to would have the same issues. ... There's always going to be discussion and concern about players who didn't get in, but at the end of the day it's a process and again, a snapshot in time isn't one year, it's 15 with this exercise."

Bonds, baseball's only seven-time Most Valuable Player, hit 762 home runs, including a record 73 in 2001.

"It is unimaginable that the best player to ever play the game would not be a unanimous first-ballot selection," said Jeff Borris of the Beverly Hills Sports Council, Bonds' longtime agent.

Clemens, the only seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is third in career strikeouts and ninth in wins.

"To those who did take the time to look at the facts," Clemens said, "we very much appreciate it."

Since 1961, the only years the writers didn't elect a candidate were when Yogi Berra topped the 1971 vote by appearing on 67 percent of the ballots cast and when Phil Niekro headed the 1996 ballot at 68 percent. Both were chosen the following years when they achieved the 75 percent necessary for election.

The other BBWAA elections without a winner were in 1945, 1946, 1950, 1958 and 1960.

"Next year, I think you'll have a rather large class and this year, for whatever reasons, you had a couple of guys come really close," Commissioner Bud Selig said at the owners' meetings in Paradise Valley, Ariz. "This is not to be voted to make sure that somebody gets in every year. It's to be voted on to make sure that they're deserving. I respect the writers as well as the Hall itself. This idea that this somehow diminishes the Hall of baseball is just ridiculous in my opinion."

Players' union head Michael Weiner called the vote "unfortunate, if not sad."

"To ignore the historic accomplishments of Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, for example, is hard to justify. Moreover, to penalize players exonerated in legal proceedings ? and others never even implicated ? is simply unfair. The Hall of Fame is supposed to be for the best players to have ever played the game. Several such players were denied access to the Hall today. Hopefully this will be rectified by future voting."

Three inductees were chosen last month by the 16-member panel considering individuals from the era before integration in 1947: Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert, umpire Hank O'Day and barehanded catcher Deacon White. They will be enshrined during a ceremony in Cooperstown on July 28, when the Hall also will honor Lou Gehrig and Rogers Hornsby among a dozen players who never received formal inductions because of restrictions during World War II.

Bonds has denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs and was convicted of one count of obstruction of justice for giving an evasive answer in 2003 to a grand jury investigating PEDs. Clemens was acquitted of perjury charges stemming from congressional testimony during which he denied using PEDs.

Sosa, who finished with 609 home runs, was among those who tested positive in MLB's 2003 anonymous survey, The New York Times reported in 2009. He told a congressional committee in 2005 that he never took illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

The BBWAA election rules say "voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played."

An Associated Press survey of 112 eligible voters conducted in late November after the ballot was announced indicated Bonds, Clemens and Sosa would fall well short of 50 percent. The big three drew even less support than that as the debate raged over who was Hall worthy.

Voters are writers who have been members of the BBWAA for 10 consecutive years at any point.

BBWAA president Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle said she didn't vote for Bonds, Clemens or Sosa.

"The evidence for steroid use is too strong," she said.

As for Biggio, "I'm surprised he didn't get in."

MLB.com's Hal Bodley, the former baseball columnist for USA Today, said Biggio and others paid the price for other players using PEDs.

"They got caught in the undertow of the steroids thing," he said.

Bodley said this BBWAA vote was a "loud and clear" message on the steroids issue. He said he couldn't envision himself voting for stars linked to drugs.

"We've a forgiving society, I know that," he said. "But I have too great a passion for the sport."

Mark McGwire, 10th on the career home run list, received 16.9 percent on his seventh try, down from 19.5 last year. He received 23.7 percent in 2010 ? a vote before he admitted using steroids and human growth hormone.

Rafael Palmeiro, among just four players with 500 homers and 3,000 hits along with Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray, received 8.8 percent in his third try, down from 12.6 percent last year. Palmeiro received a 10-day suspension in 2005 for a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs, claiming it was due to a vitamin vial given to him by teammate Miguel Tejada.

While there are exhibits about the Steroids Era at the Hall, the plaque room will remain without Bonds and Clemens, who join career hits leader Pete Rose on the outside looking in. There were four write-in votes for Rose, who never appeared on the ballot because of his lifetime ban that followed an investigation of his gambling while manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

Morris increased slightly from his 66.7 percent last year, when Barry Larkin was elected. Morris could become the player with the highest-percentage of the vote who is not in the Hall, a mark currently held by Gil Hodges at 63 percent in 1983.

Several players who fell just short in the BBWAA balloting later were elected by either the Veterans Committee or Old-Timers' Committee: Nellie Fox (74.7 percent on the 1985 BBWAA ballot), Jim Bunning (74.2 percent in 1988), Orlando Cepeda (73.6 percent in 1994) and Frank Chance (72.5 percent in 1945).

The ace of three World Series winners, Morris had 254 victories and was the winningest pitcher of the 1980s. His 3.90 ERA, however, is higher than that of any Hall of Famer.

Swiss court wipes slate clean on ancient farm debt

(AP) ? A Swiss court has wiped out an annual debt that farmers have had to pay the Catholic Church to atone for a crime 655 years ago.

Swiss public broadcaster RTS says a court in the northeastern canton (state) of Glarus ruled that the current farm owner no longer has to pay 70 Swiss francs ($76) each year because Swiss mortgage reforms in the mid-19th century made the practice invalid.

The broadcaster reported Tuesday the court sided with the landowner in a dispute with the church after he refused to make the annual payment for oil and candles.

The payments had been a tradition since 1357, when a man named Konrad Mueller killed a man named Heinrich Stucki. To atone, Mueller promised to always pay to keep an eternal lamp lit.

Stock markets cool off following gains last week

LONDON (AP) ? Global stock markets drifted lower on Monday as some investors sought to lock in profits from last week's strong gains.

Major indexes surged last week after U.S. lawmakers passed a bill to avoid a combination of government spending cuts and tax increases that have come to be known as the "fiscal cliff." The deal, however, remains incomplete. Politicians will face another deadline in two months to agree on more spending cuts.

Meanwhile, the U.S. economy keeps recovering, though only at a modest rate. On Friday, official figures showed employers added 155,000 jobs in December, roughly as expected. The good sign was that hiring held up during the tense fiscal negotiations in Washington. But the increase was not large enough to bring the unemployment rate down from 7.8 percent.

Having enjoyed a good couple of days, investors appeared ready to cash in.

"It just seems like markets are entering a consolidation phase after recent gains," Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne, said in a market commentary.

Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.3 percent to 6,071.53 while Germany's DAX was down nearly 0.5 percent to 7,738.63. France's CAC-40 lost 0.6 percent to 3,707.68.

Wall Street appeared headed for losses ahead of the opening bell. Dow Jones futures fell 0.1 percent to 13,330 while S&P 500 futures lost 0.1 percent to 1,456.10.

The one bright spot was the banking sector, where stocks were up after global regulators eased new rules obliging lenders to set capital aside. The so-called Basel III rules are a set of new international standards to make sure banks don't fall back into the sort of trouble that caused the 2008 financial crash. On Sunday, the officials setting those rules delayed the date by which certain amounts of cash had to be readily available.

The move caused a jump in bank shares - Deutsche Bank was up 3.6 percent but the biggest gains were among ailing Spanish banks, which some had feared would struggle to meet the new cash requirements. Bankinter was up 7 percent and Banco Popular was 4 percent higher.

The subdued mood in the broader markets was also seen earlier in Asia. The Nikkei in Tokyo fell 0.8 percent to close at 10,599.01.

The Hong Kong Hang Seng was nearly unchanged at 23,329.75. South Korea's Kospi lost less than 0.1 percent to 2,011.25. Benchmarks in Singapore and Taiwan fell while mainland Chinese shares rose. Weakness in Australian's resource sector sent the S&P/ASX 200 in Sydney 0.1 percent lower to 4,717.30.

South Korean and Taiwanese companies that were fined by China last week for fixing prices of LCD display screens saw their stocks tumble Monday. Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp. fell 5.1 percent. HannStar Display Corp. fell 4.7 percent. South Korea's LG Display fell 2.6 percent.

In commodity markets, the benchmark crude oil contract for February delivery was 45 cents lower at $92.64 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 17 cents to close at $93.09 in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3041 from $1.3072 late Friday in New York. The dollar dropped against the Japanese yen, to 87.88 yen from 88.13 yen.

Australia faces 'catastrophic' days as wildfires rage

Rob Blakers / EPA

Michelle Ardle was among the tourists evacuated Sunday after being trapped by forest fires in south-east Tasmania for two nights.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

CANBERRA, Australia ? Australia was bracing on Monday for days of "catastrophic" fire and heat-wave conditions, with fires already burning in five states.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard toured fire-ravaged Tasmanian townships and promised emergency aid for survivors, who told of a "fireball" that engulfed communities across the thinly populated state on Friday and Saturday.

"The trees just exploded," local man Ashley Zanol told Australian radio, recounting a wall of flames that surrounded his truck as he carted water to assist fire crews in the hard-hit township of Murdunna, which was largely leveled by the inferno.

Ferocious wildfires have forced hundreds of people to flee their homes in Australia's island state of Tasmania. Channel 4's Krishnan Guru-Murthy reports.

Tasmanian police said around 100 people feared missing in bushfires had been accounted for and there had so far been no deaths as authorities combed through still-smouldering ruins of homes and vehicles, while evacuating local people and tourists.

Bushfires were ablaze in five of Australia's six states, with 90 fires in the most populous state New South Wales, and in mountain forests around the national capital Canberra.

Record heat wave
Severe fire conditions were forecast for Tuesday, replicating those of 2009, when "Black Saturday" wildfires in Victoria state killed 173 people and caused $4.4 billion worth of damage.

A record heat wave, which began in Western Australia on Dec. 27 and lasted eight days, was the fiercest in more than 80 years in that state. ?It has spread east across the nation, making it the widest-ranging heat wave in more than a decade, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

Homes damaged by fire are seen from a helicopter between Dunalley and Boomer Bay, Tasmania, Australia, on Jan. 5. Hundreds of local residents and tourists took to the sea in boats to escape forest fires that burned to the waterline in Australia's island state of Tasmania.

New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell said record-low rains have produced large fuel loads that increase the risk of fire, combined with record temperatures and high winds, Australia's 7 News?reported.

"Tomorrow [Tuesday] is not going to be just another ordinary day," he said. "Tomorrow will be perhaps the worst fire danger day this state has ever faced."

More coverage from 7 News

Tuesday would bring the highest "catastrophic" bushfire temperature conditions, fire officials said, warning that many blazes would likely be too fierce for fire crews to easily extinguish.

"Any fire that burns under the predicted conditions ? 40-degree (Celsius) temperatures (104 degrees F), below 10 percent humidity, winds gusting over 70 kilometers an hour (43 mph) ? those conditions are by any measure horrendous," New South Wales Rural Fire Service Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers said.

PhotoBlog: Wildfires in Tasmania destroy more than 100 homes

In the Australian capital, Canberra, hit by a firestorm in 2003 that destroyed hundreds of homes, authorities said they were expecting the worst conditions in the decade since, with a fifth day of searing temperatures and strong winds.

"With those winds it boosts up the fire danger significantly," the city's deputy fire chief Michael Joyce told local reporters.

Blazes sparked by weekend lightning storms were already burning in forests surrounding the sprawling lake-and-bushland city, as they did 10 years earlier.

Limiting the dialogue is crucial and accomplishes the following: Increases the coachees ability to get to proficiency. Focuses on the most critical troubles. Other problems can be addressed right after some progress has been produced on the most important troubles initial. 11.If an employee is not identifying places that you determined (or has determined them incorrectly), use ever more particular queries to allow the employee to self-evaluate if doable. This allows you to establish if the employee doesnt know whats expected, doesnt have the ability, or just chooses not to show the ability. The Coaching Model at Work Now lets flip our consideration to Entelechys Coaching Product in follow. Phase one: Open up the Conversation The coach opens the conversation with a general problem this aids the coach get a perception for the accuracy of the coachees self-evaluation. If the coachee responds with, that was the finest get in touch with ever and you assumed that the phone was very poor, you know that youll have to regulate your coaching conversation. Stage two: Probe for What Went Properly The coach asks the coachee what went especially well and listens for the responses. By figuring out what went effectively first, a positive tone for the coaching session is set. We want to make confident that the coachee continues performing these items. This also forces the coachee NOT THE COACH to recognize superior functionality. Stage 2a: Redirect or Defer Occasionally the coachee will bring up a unfavorable when youre talking about positives. You will want to defer that discussion until finally later on in the coaching conversation by expressing, Id like to speak about that much more later on. What else went notably nicely? Other occasions, the coachee will claim something as a good that in your opinion was an area that demands advancement. You will want to redirect their perception by pointing out what you saw that helped you conclude that it was much less than fascinating. Oh, actually? Did you occur to see Johns deal with when you talked about the products functions? Thats right, he seemed to eliminate fascination when you started chatting about us fairly than about him?. Action 2b: Support and Create When the coachee accurately assesses his functionality equally strengths and locations for improvement assist the assessment by saying, I agree. Create from their conclusions to reinforce the accuracy of their self-evaluation. In this way, you are reinforcing a single of the most valuable abilities anyone can acquire: the capability to evaluate and improve their own overall performance. Phase 3: Probe for Regions for Advancement The 3rd stage is to ask the coachee what he would transform if he could do it once again. Clearly, if the coachee is aware of what could be improved and is aware of how to increase it, he wont reward from YOU telling him! And by mentally rehearsing what he will do in different ways, the chance of him actually carrying out the advancement is improved. Most professionals agree that two or about three regions for growth are sufficient for anybody to work on. Doing work on a laundry checklist of things to alter is aggravating and futile. Focus on the places of biggest want. When figuring out locations for advancement, the coachee could not have identified the one particular that you believed was most critical. Once again, you can redirect their perception by identifying what you saw that they may not have that permitted you to occur to your conclusion. I agree that the two places that you determined would undoubtedly had created the call go better. What do you believe the effect of your product characteristic presentation was on the consumer? Why? What may well you do in different ways the following time?? Phase 4: Summarize and Assist Even however you may have limited the coaching to a number of strengths and a few areas for growth, you will want to briefly summarize the dialogue, particularly what the coachee will do in a different way the subsequent time. This recap will result in the most crucial points to remain refreshing in memory. You will also want to help the adjustments by declaring something like, I believe people alterations will make your following call go even much better. Stick to these four measures to support your staff and colleagues enhance their overall performance. In the next problem we go over how to give suggestions in the coaching framework.
