Samsung introduced us to the?Ativ Book 9 Plus Ultrabook back in June, but now the company has provided more details about its forthcoming rollout. The tech giant has also announced the new Ativ Tab 3 Windows 8 tablet.

The Ativ Book 9 Plus laptop is a Windows 8 answer to the MacBook Pro, complete with a super-high-res Gorilla Glass screen. The display packs?3,200x1,800 resolution into its?13.3 inches, which beats the similarly sized Retina display's 2,560x1,600. At 0.53 inches and 3.1 pounds, it's also thinner and lighter than the equivalent Apple notebook. (Its other specs are similar: Intel Core i5-4200U processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB solid-state drive) But perhaps most notably, it will cost $100 less than the cheapest Retina display MacBook Pro -- $1,399.99 -- when it becomes available for pre-order on August 18.

The 10.1-inch?Ativ Tab 3 is being touted by Samsung as the world's thinnest Windows 8 tablet at just 0.31 inches thick (and 1.28 pounds). In comparison. the newest iPad is 0.37 inches thick and 1.44 pounds. It uses an Intel Atom Z2760 processor, and comes with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of solid-state storage. Its resolution is not Retina-quality, however, at 1,366x768. It does include a S Pen digital stylus, as well as a cover with a built-in Bluetooth keyboard and kickstand. Samsung also throws in Microsoft?Office Home & Student?version.?The Ativ Tab 3 will go on sale on September 1 for $699.99.

I'm sorry to say, but you trained your new husband that it was okay to walk all over you. If he can walk all over you, and his son knows this, why wouldn't he go running to daddy every time he has a 'problem'.

I really don't understand how you can be happy in a marriage where the other side has absolutely no respect for you. It's clear that you know it and feel it, because you wouldn't be here .. but my real question to you is this.

Why aren't you standing up for yourself? Why do you want to be with someone who isn't concerned about what you are and are not okay with? You've said it yourself. The thing is, this has nothing to do with your son in law and everything to do with your husband.

It's a complete cop out to say you had no choice in the son in law moving in, a cry of playing victim. Everyone has a choice. If your husband didn't like or agree to a set plan in regards to paying rent or doing something around YOUR home to maintain it, why wasn't his arse shown the door?

From the outside looking in, the husband pays for nothing of the household and sometimes 'helps with groceries'. He gets to spend money on the 'fun stuff' like vacations, but doesn't have to spend money on a household? He in turn, feeds that complete upside down view on life to his son.

It boggles my mind.

Vick to start, split time with Foles vs. Patriots

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Michael Vick or Nick Foles? Might as well flip a coin.

Vick will start for the Philadelphia Eagles in their preseason opener against New England on Friday night only because it's his turn to go first in the quarterback rotation. Foles also will take snaps with the starters, and the second-year pro will start the second preseason game.

"It was Mike's day in the rotation, that was the easiest way for us to do it and then we'll make sure the rotation works out that Nick will get the start next week," coach Chip Kelly said Thursday. "The two of those guys, we feel like we've got it balanced out. We met with those guys this morning. They were great with it, so that's kind of our plan going in."

Both Vick and Foles are expected to get between 12 and 20 snaps vs. the Patriots. The two QBs have been competing for the No. 1 job since Kelly's arrival in Philadelphia.

"It doesn't mean anything," Vick said about the start. "The only thing I want to do is go out there and have fun, play the game, play with a purpose, enjoy every snap, try to make the most out of it as long as I'm out there and just try to be consistent like I have throughout camp and have fun playing the game."

Rookie Matt Barkley will come in after Vick and Foles in the second quarter and play through the third. Dennis Dixon and G.J. Kinne will play the fourth.

The Eagles and Patriots concluded three days of join practices before facing each other on the field at Lincoln Financial Field.

"I've said it all along, it's very difficult to evaluate somebody in just helmets and shorts," Kelly said. "That's not how the game is played, so obviously I think our practices from an intensity level, we're ramping up a little here just because the Patriots are here.

"On both sides I thought it was great work for us. For guys that are competing right now, the preseason has to be the same way. If that's not your approach as a player, you're going to get passed on by."

While Kelly uses the preseason games to evaluate who will be his starting quarterback, the Patriots are in an enviable position. They have two-time NFL and Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady. Third-year pro Ryan Mallet is the backup followed by Tim Tebow.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick hasn't told Tebow if he'll play against the Eagles, though it's likely he will take some snaps.

"I'm getting better every single day, more comfortable with the offense and better timing with everybody around me, better understanding of what the coaches want me to do," Tebow said.

Mallet certainly will see plenty of action.

"I can't wait," Mallett said. "I feel like I've improved a lot overall. I feel confident and ready to go."

It'll be the first chance for rookie wide receiver Aaron Dobson to catch passes from Brady. The Patriots have a new group for Brady after their top five receiving leaders from last season are no longer with the team or injured.

"Definitely jitters a little bit, just because it's something new," Dobson said. "I'm ready for it. I'm excited to play."

Running back LeGarrette Blount also will make his Patriots debut. Blount, who ran for 1,007 yards as a rookie for Tampa Bay in 2010, is coming off a disappointing season and was traded to New England for a seventh-round draft pick. He'll be playing against his former coach at Oregon in Kelly.

"He's a real good coach and a real good guy," Blount said. "I loved his offense at Oregon and if it's going to be anything like that, they'll be pretty productive."

All eyes will be on Kelly's offense to see how up-tempo style translates in the NFL. Kelly had tremendous success at Oregon, and everyone has been wondering since he replaced Andy Reid how he'll do in the NFL.

Though Kelly won't show too much in the preseason, it'll be a small sampling at least.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," Kelly said. "I think the way our camp worked out for itself, our players came in with great attitudes and that part was exciting. Then you get an opportunity to now bring a new team in. I think that kind of changed how we were doing things. Now we're getting into the preseason portion of it. We don't talk about it's just the preseason. It's on the line every time you go on the field.

"So we're all excited about our opportunity to play tomorrow night."

Kids' 'Hunger Games' camp stirs controversy

Pop culture

Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games."

Lionsgate

Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games" movie.

Summer camp is traditionally a place where lots of kids get together, run around, swim, play games, maybe ride horses. And then there's one particular camp that's taken the games-playing to a new level.

A Largo, Fla.,?Country Day School summer camp has been running a "Hunger Games" themed tournament, where 26 young participants are expected to fight one another to the "death," as the young people in the fictional "Hunger Games" books and movies do.

In a piece reported by the Tampa Bay Times, the adolescents (of course) don't really fight to the death ? it's all playacting. But the way the kids take on their roles means they end up telling each other things like, "I will probably kill you first" and "I might stab you."?

The children "kill" one another by pulling flag belts from their enemy's waists, and the camper with the most "lives" at tournament's end wins.?

The story quoted clinical psychologist Susan Toler as saying the camp idea was "unthinkable," noting that "when (children) start thinking and owning and adopting and assuming (those killer) roles, it becomes close to them. The violence becomes less egregious."

In a statement posted to its blog, Country Day School denied that it encouraged violence. "Country Day School always prioritizes the emotional and physical safety of our students," the school wrote. "As we purposefully promote peace and kindness with all of our students, it is unthinkable that Country Day School would ever support or encourage violence."

The school also explained its decision to offer a "Hunger Games" camp: "After careful consideration, we decided to offer a camp for middle school students centered on 'The Hunger Games' in response to adolescent interest in the popular book trilogy. Our decision was predicated on the development of a curriculum that replaced any subjects of violence with positive themes of character development and team building."

The blog also offered?a video "that provides an accurate overview of the camp."

The camp has made some adjustments this year, changing the semantics of what the children were doing. They were no longer killing one another, but collecting lives. They also participated in team-building activities like the Minefield, where kids had to guide one another through verbal cues only through a field of cones, baseball gloves and Hula-Hoops.

The article ended, however, by showing that the camp was far from violence-free. One 11-year-old noted that he'd gotten "stepped on."?

"I'm sure it was an accident," said camp director Jared D'Alessio.

The boy begged to differ, saying he'd been knocked down. "I got stepped on," he said.

Country Day School denied the incident. "This misrepresentation and the suggestion that a child was hurt while in our care could not be further from the truth," the school wrote on its blog.

U.S. strongly condemns assassination of Tunisian politician

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday strongly condemned the assassination of Tunisian opposition politician Mohamed Brahmi and called for a thorough investigation to bring those responsible before the courts.

"This is not the first political assassination since Tunisia's revolution and there is no justification for such outrageous and cowardly acts in a democratic Tunisia," State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told a daily briefing.

"We urge the Tunisian government to immediately conduct a transparent and professional investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice in a timely manner," she added.

There is no such thing as emotionless investing | Abnormal Returns

  • abnormalreturns
  • July 10th, 2013

The idea that successful traders overcome or eliminate their emotions is completely off-base. If that were to truly happen, the trader would behave like a brain-damaged patient.? ? Brett Steenbarger

The point being that there is no form of trading or investing in which emotions do not play a role. One could argue that investors are in a constant state of stress. Even automated trading systems are in the end built by humans and maybe more importantly are monitored by humans. So the idea of emotionless investing is a pipe dream. That leaves for us the problem of how emotions affect, most often negatively, our investing.

Maybe we can get a better sense for how to invest by looking at those investors who have done a good job historically. Carl Richards writing at the Bucks Blog notes this intimate connection between emotions and decision making.

I think well-behaved investors are just better equipped than the average investor over the long haul. But they?ve also done something that the rest of us can do. They have acknowledged the connection between emotion and behavior.

The question for investors is how can they recognize and acknowledge their emotions while not letting them derail their already predetermined investment plans? This of course assumes you already have a written investment plan. If you don?t please write one out now! For the vast majority of investors a simple investment plan with as few moving parts as possible is the easiest path to follow.

Anna Prior at the WSJ had a piece up this week that talked about this very topic of simplicity in asset allocation. In the article she notes how a simple three-fund portfolio make up of US equities, US bonds and international equities provides investors with a sensible easily manageable portfolio. By focusing on a relatively small number of options it avoids the temptation to jump in and out of hot asset classes.

In one very real way a simple investing approach has taken hold in the fund world. The acknowledged rise of the target date mutual fund, especially as a default option for defined contribution plans, shows that investors are interested in a one-stop solution. In a very real sense target date funds can serve as a benchmark for investors who are looking to do it on their own. Target date funds certainly have their detractors but they provide individual investors in practice with a more workable solution than trying to do it themselves.

Some would like to go even farther. Felix Salmon at Reuters in a vintage post notes his interest in an ?everything bagel? fund. One that on an indexed basis invests in every investable asset class around the world. In short, a one-stop default investment. For many this would be an attractive option, a true throw up your hands default investment. We must recognize that there are some real shortcoming to a too simple approach.

James Picerno at the Capital Spectator acknowledges that a three fund solution has a certain appeal but is skeptical that it somehow absolves investors of the difficult decisions in investing. He writes:

In other words, don?t kid yourself into thinking that if you hold just three funds you?ll have an easier time of designing and managing a rebalancing strategy. Market volatility will continue to present you with challenging choices that demand steely discipline to sell when everybody else is buying, and vice versa.

Rebalancing is a big reason why a one or three-fund solution may be too simple. Additional asset classes can provide investors with the opportunity to generate returns through a disciplined rebalancing process. In addition additional degrees of freedom also makes the tax-harvesting process potentially fruitful. With increasing complexity more decisions and the risk of decision fatigue rears its ugly head. So as with most things in life we need to balance the potential gains from portfolio complexity with its obvious downsides.

It?s funny that simplicity should need a defense. However most of the time the media is chasing ephemeral trends driving us to change our portfolios in ways that in the long (and often short run) end up hurting us more than helping. That is why when we see simple advice, clearly stated we should take note.

Jason Zweig writing at MoneyBeat says all of this better than I can so I will leave you with an excerpt from a piece he wrote that in an elegant summarizes his career in investment writing and in the end touches on this topic of portfolio simplicity. He writes:

From financial history and from my own experience, I long ago concluded that regression to the mean is the most powerful law in financial physics: Periods of above-average performance are inevitably followed by below-average returns, and bad times inevitably set the stage for surprisingly good performance.

But humans perceive reality in short bursts and streaks, making a long-term perspective almost impossible to sustain ? and making most people prone to believing that every blip is the beginning of a durable opportunity.

My role, therefore, is to bet on regression to the mean even as most investors, and financial journalists, are betting against it. I try to talk readers out of chasing whatever is hot and, instead, to think about investing in what is not hot. Instead of pandering to investors? own worst tendencies, I try to push back. My role is also to remind them constantly that knowing what not to do is much more important than what to do. Approximately 99% of the time, the single most important thing investors should do is absolutely nothing.

Doing nothing is hard for us as investors. A simple, but not too simple portfolio, seems almost childish in this day and age. However a simple portfolio provides investors with the framework to ephemeral trends peddled by the media. In short it helps provide us some emotional distance between what we feel and what we actually do.

Aaron Hernandez appears in Florida uniform in EA Sports' NCAA Football 14

EA's in the process of replacing the former Gator with a fellow Urban Meyer player, former Utah quarterback Alex Smith.

As Florida, the Patriots, and Urban Meyer all work to distance themselves from Aaron Hernandez's legacy, circumstances have put the murder suspect right back in Gator blue and orange.

He appears as an unlockable player in NCAA Football 14's Ultimate Team mode, which lets gamers add certain real-life names to their teams by completing challenges in the Skills Trainer mode.

The decision to include the former All-American tight end was surely made well before the investigation into Odin Lloyd's murder first made news on June 18. And the game's July 9 release meant the game didn't have much of a window for removing him. Based on player and team ratings leaks, the game looks to have been finalized before June 11.

Update: EA Sports' Julie Foster comments:

We made a decision to remove Aaron Hernandez from Madden NFL 25 and NCAA Football 14. Because NCAA Football 14 was finalized prior to our decision, Hernandez' image still appears in the Nike Skills Trainer. However, he is not in the game, and anyone who unlocks that particular Nike Skills Trainer reward will receive an Alex Smith Ultimate Team player item instead. The image of Hernandez will be removed via a Title Update in the near future.

Cooliris Continues Push Into China and Russia, Shaking Hands With Tencent and Yandex

Image (1) cooliris-logo.png for post 83664Photo-sharing startup?Cooliris is continuing its push into two of the world’s biggest Internet markets, China and Russia. The Kleiner Perkins-backed company has just partnered with Tencent in China to pull images from Tencent’s microblogging platform, Weibo, into Cooliris’ mobile apps. On top of that, it is also expanding its relationship with Yandex, the Google of Russia, to pull images from Yandex’s search engine and its cloud storage product, Disk, into Cooliris. Financial terms of the two deals were not disclosed. Cooliris made its name in 2008 with a browser add-on called PicLens, which would stretch a set of photos over a sphere or display them as a wall you could virtually walk across. It used to make its money through ads embedded in the “photo wall” it rendered in browsers, but since it transitioned to a mobile app strategy in 2012, freemium add-ons will be the way forward, said CEO Soujanya Bhumkar. The company plans to release premium features as part of a subscription plan later in the year, he said. So it makes sense that it’s keen to push further into China and Russia. After its first move into China via a tie up?with?Renren, aka China’s “Facebook,” in December last year, it enjoyed a 30-fold traffic spike. Bhumkar added that the number of photos that users have interacted with — shared or expanded from the thumbnail view — has also gone up from 300 million to 550 million in the past six months. “We’re expecting to hit new milestones for user growth with these new partnerships bringing us to international users,” he said. About 60 percent of Cooliris’ 3 million iOS users are in the U.S., with Asia its next-largest market at 30 percent. The company is looking to push further into Asia rapidly by working with established names there, he said. This is not its first partnership with Yandex, either. In February this year, it struck a deal with?Yandex Fotki, Yandex’s photo hosting service.?Yandex currently accounts for about 65 percent of Russia’s search market, and its Disk product rivals Dropbox, with about half of the several million files uploaded daily to Disk photos and graphics, according to Yandex. Currently, Cooliris’ app already pulls content from Facebook, Evernote, Tumblr, Flickr, Google+ and Google Drive, Twitter and Microsoft’s SkyDrive. That?combined pool gives it to date about a billion photos accessible within its app, more than double the 350 million it

Immigration, student loan top congressional agenda

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans and Democrats will put good will to the test when Congress returns this week to potentially incendiary fights over nominations, unresolved disputes over student loans and the farm bill, and the uncertainty of whether lawmakers have the political will to rewrite the nation's immigration laws.

The cooperation evident in the Senate last month with passage of a bipartisan immigration bill could be wiped out immediately if Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., frustrated with GOP delaying tactics on judges and nominations, tries to change the Senate rules by scrapping the current three-fifths majority for a simple majority.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has indicated it's a decision Reid could regret if the GOP seizes Senate control in next year's elections.

"Once the Senate definitively breaks the rules to change the rules, the pressure to respond in kind will be irresistible to future majorities," McConnell said last month, looking ahead to 2014 when Democrats have to defend 21 seats to the GOP's 14.

McConnell envisioned a long list of reversals from the Democratic agenda, from repealing President Barack Obama's health care law to shipping radioactive nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain in Reid's home state of Nevada.

Recently elected Democrats have clamored for changes in Senate rules as Obama has faced Republican resistance to his nominations.

Two Cabinet-rank choices ? Tom Perez as labor secretary and Gina McCarthy to head the Environmental Protection Agency ? could be approved by the Senate this month after a loud debate over administration policies.

The GOP also has challenged Obama's three judicial nominees to the powerful U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit as they've tried to eliminate the vacancies.

Reid had served notice in April that the Democratic majority could change the Senate rules on "any given day," and he was willing to do so if necessary.

In the Republican-controlled House, courteous behavior, even within the GOP ranks, has barely been perceptible with the ignominious failure of the farm bill. Some collaboration will be necessary if the House is to move ahead on immigration legislation this month.

Conservatives from safe, gerrymandered House districts have rebuffed appeals from some national Republicans who argue that embracing immigration overhaul will boost the party's political standing with an increasingly diverse electorate, especially in the 2016 presidential election. The conservatives strongly oppose any legislation offering legalization to immigrants living here illegally.

Reflecting the will of the rank and file, House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio and other Republicans have said the comprehensive Senate immigration bill that couples the promise of citizenship for those living here unlawfully with increased border security is a nonstarter in the House.

Republicans were assessing the views of their constituents during the weeklong July Fourth break and planned to discuss their next steps at a private meeting Wednesday.

"I think what members need before we proceed on the actual immigration reform is an ironclad guarantee that the border is going to be secure," Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz., said just before the recess. He didn't see any urgency to acting quickly.

"I find it very interesting the argument that we can't wait till the border is secure, we can't even do a six-month test to make sure ... we have to get them out of the shadows immediately," Salmon said. "They've been in the shadows for 20 years, and another six months is going to break their backs? I mean come on, that's not even a valid argument."

Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said Republicans would be hashing out "two key hot spots" in Wednesday's meeting: the pathway to citizenship and health care.

"We need to be the party of solutions and not always obstructing. And, so, I think there's an effort here that we have a broken immigration system. We need to fix this immigration system," McCaul said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation," predicting that the full House could take up immigration as early as this month and representatives from both chambers could be working to resolve differences in the House and Senate versions late this year or early next.

The House Judiciary Committee has adopted a piecemeal approach, approving a series of bills, none with a path to citizenship that Obama and Democrats are seeking. Democrats hope the single-issue bills get them to a conference with the Senate, where the prospects for a far-reaching overhaul improve.

"I think what you're finding is that there will be a compromise, a smart compromise," said Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif., said Sunday, also on CBS. "You have to be smart. You have to be tough. But you have to be fair. And if you can do that, you'll have a full fix."

A more pressing concern for some lawmakers was the fate of the five-year, half-trillion-dollar farm bill.

In a surprise last month, the House rejected the bill as 62 Republicans voted no after Boehner had urged support for the measure.

House conservatives wanted cuts deeper than $2 billion annually, or about 3 percent, in the almost $80 billion-a-year food stamp program while Democrats were furious with a last-minute amendment that would have added additional work requirements to food stamps, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

Reid has made it clear that an extension of the current farm law, passed in 2008, is unlikely as he presses the House to pass the Senate version of the bill. That leaves Boehner to figure out the next step before the current policy expires Sept. 30.

Congress also must figure out what to do about interest rates on college student loans, which doubled from 3.4 percent last Monday because of partisan wrangling in the Senate.

Lawmakers promised to restore lower rates when they return this week, both retroactively and before students start signing loan documents later this summer. For now, the rate stands at 6.8 percent, which is higher than most loans available from private lenders.

Congress faces political and economic fights over the budget, with the fiscal year ending Sept. 30 and Congress plodding through spending bills with no sign they will be done on time. The House is set to vote this week on the spending bill for the Energy Department.

In addition to legislation to keep the government running, Congress probably will have to vote on whether to raise the nation's borrowing authority, a politically fraught vote that roiled the markets in August 2009.

Three Senate committees will consider Obama nominees for major national security positions this month, confirmation hearings certain to set off a political dust-up over the president's policies though the criticism is unlikely to scuttle the selections.

Questions about the administration's policy toward Syria and plans to arm the rebels in their civil war with President Bashar Assad's forces will dominate the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the re-nomination of Gen. Martin Dempsey for chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The hearing is scheduled for July 18.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is expected to hold a hearing on Samantha Power, the president's pick for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and a subcommittee meets July 11 to consider the nomination of Victoria Nuland for assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs.

That posting typically wouldn't draw a great deal of attention, but senators are certain to press Nuland about her work on the widely debunked talking points about the deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. Four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed in the Sept. 11 attack last year.

Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations at that time, used the talking points five days after the attack, blaming the assault on a spontaneous protest over an anti-Islamic video.

The Senate Judiciary Committee holds a confirmation hearing Tuesday on Obama's choice of James Comey to serve as FBI director. If confirmed by the Senate, Comey, a top Bush administration lawyer best known for defiantly refusing to go along with White House demands on warrantless wiretapping nearly a decade ago, would replace Robert Mueller.

The administration's recently disclosed surveillance programs are likely topics for Comey's hearing.

Beshear meets with Department of Energy officials, calls meeting 'productive'

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear met with U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and other officials on Monday morning regarding the future of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

Beshear called the meeting "productive" and said his goal remains the same:?to preserve jobs at the facility.

?We?ve been clear from the start that our primary objectives are to find new economic development opportunities for the facility, to create and preserve jobs, and to protect the public by promptly beginning site cleanup,? said Gov. Beshear. ?Sec. Moniz has listened to each of those concerns and understands the importance of this enormous asset to that region and to our entire state. After this meeting, I feel confident that we will continue to closely work together toward each of those goals.?

The U.S. Department of Energy issued a Request for Offers to make use of the plant last week. Beshear said at the time he was "disappointed"?in the department's request because it would allow a business to purchase the uranium tails without making use of the site. The governor also said the DOE did not relay immediate plans at the time to start cleanup operations

Currently, the plant's 1,100 employees are waiting to hear what will happen to the facility and their jobs now that the DOE will not extend their contract with USEC. That decision was announced in late May, leaving the facility's jobs hanging in the balance.

Corporate Bio-War: Did BP?s Gulf of Mexico oil spill create human eating bacteria? One person dead, three wounded! Giant Dead Zone emerging!

07 July 2013 (14:06 UTC-07 Tango)/28 Sha?ban 1434/16 Tir 1391/30 Ji-Wie (5th month) 4711

??.we?re virtually on the verge of something that could end up becoming a deadly pandemic.?-John Waterman, former professor of anatomy, trained for biological warfare with U.S. Army Medical Command

In the past week, at least one person has been killed, three wounded by flesh eating bacteria, after fishing or wading along the Gulf of Mexico (for some reason some local news sources are reporting they were swimming).? It was reported by the?Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

The gram-negative bacteria is called Vibrio vulnificus, and infects through existing wounds on your body, or injestion.? Health officials say the four people had wounds on their skin when they got infected.? The man who died was fishing from a boat.? Another fisherman got infected when he was cut by a fishing hook.? One man cut his foot on an oyster reef, and the fourth man was reported as having Gulf water splash on him.

One man is still in the hospital.

Louisiana health department?s beach monitoring program has been testing the water at 25 locations, to find out if the levels of the bacteria are higher than normal.? Usually people with healthy immune systems can fight off Vibrio vulnificus.

It is fact that British Petroleum sprayed massive amounts of GMO (genetically modified organism) bacteria onto the massive oil spill caused by the Deepwater Horizon disaster, in 2006.

Was it the GMO bacteria nick named Synthia (because it?s a synthetic bacteria created using viruses)?? Some analysts warned that the GMO bacteria would affect the naturally occurring bacteria in the Gulf of Mexico, or replicate out of control.? For years now there have been reports about the expanding and evolving Blue Plague in the Gulf of Mexico, things like fish found with two mouths, biologists reporting bacteria that has never been found in the Gulf before the BP disaster, ??evidence of bizarre sickness in the phytoplankton and bacterial communities.?, persistent skin rashes on people being caused by bacteria that were not affected by antibiotics, etc.

Even BP official Mike Utsler admitted to the U.K. news media that ?There is a new form of microbiology that is attacking this plume and using it as a food source.? ? And that was in 2010, four years after the spill!

There have been many warnings from officials in health care, science, EPA and even some members of the U.S. Congress, but for some reason the U.S. main streamer news media, and the majority of public officials are ignoring the ongoing disaster in the Gulf of Mexico:

?Within a matter of months, the bacteria completely removed that methane. The bacteria kicked on more effectively than we expected.?-David Valentine, University of California Santa Barbara

?It would take a superhuman microbe to do what they [BP] are claiming.?-Samantha Joye, University of Georgia

?Oil-eating bacteria produce bio-films?..studies have found that bio-films are rapidly colonized? by other Gram-negative bacteria, including those known to?infect humans.?-Riki Ott, marine toxicologist, 2010

?This is like a major bacterial storm. It could be the reason we are seeing a variance of symptoms in?different individuals.?In some people, we see respiratory complications, while in others we see skin or GI symptoms. I think it is due to a multitude of colonized bacteria, which may have been triggered by BP?s disaster.?-Allison Schmidt, retired RN, 2010

?We are undertaking a huge uncontrolled experiment with the entire Gulf. They have fallen down on the job very substantially because they allowed BP to use dispersants. Even when they told BP not to use dispersants they allowed BP to ignore their advice.?-Jerrold Nadler, U.S. congressman from New York, August 2010

?We knew going into this, and the EPA knew, that this mixture is highly toxic to many, many species. There is a whole weight of literature.?-Susan Shaw, Marine Environmental Research Institute, August 2010

?They [BP] are trying to spin this limited piece of information to make it look like dispersants are safe and that the Corexit dispersant is safe.?-Hugh Kaufman, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2010

Now, researchers with the University of Michigan and Louisiana State University are warning of a record breaking Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

It could be as large as?13777 square kilometers (8561 square miles, the size of New Jersey)!

It?s being caused by record breaking algae blooms, which are feeding off the record use of farm chemicals/?nutrients? (due to the fact that GMO crops have produced super insects) that runoff into the Gulf.? Those algae are then eaten by the new GMO affected bacteria, and that process then destroys the oxygen in the water, killing off most of the marine life!

The Navy's Advanced Guns System Fires Rocket-Powered Artillery Shells

The 54-caliber, 5-inch naval artillery shells fired by Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are brutally efficient at destroying surface ships, aircraft, and land targets. But they're little more than pea shooters compared to the 6.1-inch rocket-propelled, GPS-guided shells shot by the new Zumwalt-class' Advanced Guns System.

The Advanced Gun System is the next generation of naval artillery designed by BAE Systems for use aboard the new Zumwalts when they launch in 2015. A pair of 155 mm caliber AGS will constitute the new destroyer's primary guns and are capable of firing up to ten rounds of precision munitions per minute through their water-cooled barrels. What's more, the system is entirely electric, although its massive 800 kW consumption severely limits which ships in the US fleet can incorporate them?at this point, only the three upcoming Zumwalts have the power supplies and space needed to support them but given the time and money BAE's sunk into their R&D, it's very likely they'll be adapted to future warships.

The destroyer's automated Intra-Ship Rearmament System (AIRS) handles reloading the guns using a series of 6,000-pound pallets, each holding eight propelling charges and eight 230-pound Long Range Land Attack Projectile (LRLAP) shells, for a total magazine of 304 shots. Interestingly, while the AGS fires a 155mm projectile (which is pretty much standard for US field artillery) it can't actually fire normal Howitzer rounds, only LRAPs.

The Navy's Advanced Guns System Fires Rocket-Powered Artillery Shells

An LRAP is basically an 88-inch long rocket-propelled artillery shell with GPS-guidance. With a 24-pound blast-frag warhead, the LRAP is roughly equivalent to the M795 artillery shells used in modern M119 Howitzers, but it travels much further and much more accurately. Current naval 5-inch guns have a range of roughly 13 nautical miles, the new AGS can heave an LRAP more than 59 nm. In fact, during flight testing, the munition accurately hit targets up to 100 nm, falling within a radius of less than 160 feet. Future iterations could even employ IR seeker heads?you know, to better shoot down planes and such. [Wikipedia 1, 2 - Defense Industry Daily - Lockheed Martin - LRAP Image: Lockheed]

On the Job: Business travelers can use downtime to network | The ...

If you?re like many business travelers, you?re only thought at the end of a day may be to head to your hotel room, watch "True Blood" and order room service.

But for Patricia Rossi, business travel is more than getting from point A to point B with a minimum of hassles. She sees it as a golden opportunity to network and make new contacts.

"Most of us already have a beautiful relationship with the [television] remote," she says. "Business travel is a great time to get out of your room and meet people."

Rossi says the hotel chain she frequents when traveling ? Hyatt House extended-stay hotels ? offers evening socials that allow her to meet other business people in a relaxed setting with food and drink already on hand.

"All I have to do is show up, smell good and be nice," she says.

Rossi sees something special in breaking bread with contacts on the road, and inviting more than one contact to a meal can take the pressure off you.

"People really appreciate it so much," she says.

She also organizes "tweet ups," she says, contacting regular Twitter followers and asking them to meet her if she?s in the city where they live.

"You?ve already developed those relationships online," Rossi says. "But this is a chance to get kneecap to kneecap with people, which is so important."

Another gold mine of networking opportunities is a hotel gym, she says.

story continues below

"You?re in there, blowing off some stress and staying healthy," she says. "I?ve developed some of the best relationships with people I meet in gyms."

While many employers trimmed business travel during the economic downturn, it is starting to make a comeback. In 2012, employers spent about $225 billion on domestic travel, a 5 percent increase from 2011.

That uptick may be because of the bottom-line effect of employees being on the road. Specifically, an Oxford Economics study conducted for the U.S. Travel Association found that 57 percent of business travelers say trimming their travel budget during the economic doldrums hurt their company?s performance.

Rossi, a business-etiquette coach, says if you?re reticent about approaching strangers on the road to make a business contact, try these tips:

Be observant ? Spotting other business travelers with their briefcases and professional dress is easy, but also look for body language that shows a person is open to starting a conversation.

You can start with a simple, "Where are you headed?" and see if a person is open to talking. The guy who turns his body away from you or the woman who doesn?t offer a friendly smile is revealing through body language that he or she is not open to chit-chat.

Share a business card ? Nothing is more off putting than watching "someone pat his body down like he?s on fire" as he searches for a business card, Rossi says.

Always keep business cards in a handy spot so you can present one easily with your name facing the recipient. If you?re the one receiving the card, make a polite comment or ask a question about the company where the person works.

Follow up ? Whether you make a new business contact through an evening get-together or in the airport security line, make sure you send a follow up e-mail or handwritten note.

"If the person mentions that a daughter is graduating, send a follow-up note saying that you hope everything went well," Rossi says. "Or, if the person mentions a love of NASCAR, follow up with an article about NASCAR in a handwritten note."

Notes sent through regular mail are especially powerful for establishing a connection, she says.

Football NFL considers banning academically ineligible players from Scouting Combine

Per PFT....

In response to the criticism arising from the Aaron Hernandez case, the NFL is considering a change that, in our view, ultimately will have no impact on the decision of teams to take chances on players with questionable backgrounds.

According to Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com, the NFL is considering barring academically ineligible prospects from the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Feldman, citing an unnamed NFL source, reports that the possibility is ?being discussed because of the increased scrutiny on the maturity and commitment of the prospects entering the NFL.?

By excluding the players deemed most likely to be drafted from Indianapolis, the NFL would only be making the scouting process more cumbersome and expensive for its teams. The primary benefit of the Scouting Combine comes from bringing all of the top prospects and all of the teams to the same place, reducing significantly the costs of the medical review and creating an opportunity to talk to as many players as possible, either via the normal interview rotation or the loosely-organized (and lesser-known) ?train station? conversations, which in theory allows a sufficiently diligent team to register face time with every player.

Besides, academically ineligible players would still be drafted, whether they go to the Scouting Combine or not.

So while it?s good that the NFL is considering ways to prevent future Aaron Hernandezes from being employed by NFL teams when they allegedly commit murder or other mayhem, banning academically ineligible players from the Scouting Combine won?t do anything to accomplish the goal.

Unless the goal is to generate some P.R. that will make the casual fan think the NFL is serious about the problem. If the NFL really is serious about the problem, however, this isn?t the way to solve it.

Illnesses prompt wide Whole Foods cheese recall

(AP) ? Whole Foods Market Inc. is recalling Crave Brothers Les Freres cheese in response to an outbreak of a bacterial infection that has sickened people in several states and killed at least one person.

Whole Foods says the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. It was sold in 30 states and Washington DC under names including Les Freres and Crave Brothers Les Freres. The cheese was cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap and sold with Whole Foods Market scale labels. The company is posting signs in its stores to inform customers about the recall.

Officials said cases have been identified in at least three states. Public health officials in Illinois said Wednesday that one resident became sick after eating contaminated cheese in May. Minnesota officials said Thursday that one elderly person in the state died and another was hospitalized after illnesses linked to the cheese. Both of those illnesses happened in June.

Listeria can lead to severe illness for women who are pregnant or people who have weakened immune systems. In healthy individuals, it can cause symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Crave Brothers is based in Waterloo, Wis. The company announced a voluntary recall of Les Freres, Petit Frere, and Petit Frere with Truffles cheese made on July 1 or earlier. It said the cheeses were distributed around the country through retail and food service outlets and mail order.

Whole Foods said customers should throw the cheese away and bring in their receipts for a full refund.

Some ticket scalpers pass on Okla. benefit concert

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? A concert benefiting Oklahoma tornado victims has drawn some of the biggest names in country music, but with proceeds intended for charity it is not attracting scalpers hoping to prey on an unsuspecting public.

Oklahoma natives Toby Keith and Garth Brooks are among the star-studded lineup planned for the Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert at the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Other performers include Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Sammy Hagar, Ronnie Dunn, Mel Tillis, John Anderson, and Carrie Underwood, who will perform via satellite from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.

While so many big names might normally make the show a boon for ticket scalpers and the secondary ticket market, some concert promoters say that doesn't seem to be the case for Saturday's show.

"What I've heard from the industry ... is that it would be taboo on this particular event," said Brad White, an independent concert promoter from Norman. "Even the secondary ticket guys are avoiding this."

The organizers of Saturday's concert declined a request by The Associated Press to discuss ticket scalping, but several independent promoters not associated with the concert said that although scalping may technically be legal, making a profit off the misfortune of others is certainly in poor taste.

Some major ticket brokers like San Francisco-based StubHub declined to enable listings for Saturday's concert and instead provided a link where customers can donate to the relief fund.

"This has been our policy with all Oklahoma relief events," Emma Leggat, StubHub's head of corporate social responsibility, said in an email to the AP. "Beyond this, StubHub is currently moving toward a model whereby we will enable nonprofits to benefit directly from secondary ticket sales for charity events through donated fees."

Norman-based ticket broker Totally Tickets had tickets for sale on its website from face value of $25 up to $109. The owners of the company declined a request for comment, but said in a message on its website that "demand for tickets to this event is extraordinary and we have decided to handle a limited amount of tickets for this event to serve our customers that have made us successful over the years and put us in a position to be able to help those in need." The company also claims to have donated more than $20,000 to victims of the tornadoes.

Although major ticket brokers are shying away from the resale of tickets, numerous tickets to the event can be found online on sites like Craigslist and eBay for up to 10 times face value, or $250. City officials in Norman also pointed out there is no prohibition on the sale of tickets outside the event on Saturday.

The money raised from ticket sales benefits the United Way of Central Oklahoma, which has established a fund specifically to aid victims of the tornadoes and violent storms that pummeled the state in May and led to 48 deaths. A separate benefit concert last month hosted by Oklahoma native country music star Blake Shelton and televised live on NBC raised more than $6 million in donations and pledges.

Debby Hampton, president and CEO of United Way of Central Oklahoma, said it's not clear how much Saturday's concert will generate, but that money raised will help with immediate, intermediate and long-term needs of those affected by the storms. Hampton said she also said she was disappointed to learn that some people were looking to mark up the price of tickets and make a profit off the misfortunate of others.

"It is disheartening that somebody would think that way," Hampton said. "I'm close to the disaster, and when you see the destruction and the lives that have to be rebuilt, to hear that someone would capitalize on that, it is tough to hear."

Bankers call for Swiss to be European base for Chinese currency

BERN, SWITZERLAND ? The Swiss Bankers Association wants to see the country become the new European offshore hub for the Chinese renminbi, as China moves to match the role of its currency to the country?s growing economic importance worldwide.

The SBA issued the following statement Friday:

?China?s rise to economic power is also resulting in a growing importance of the Chinese currency, the renminbi. Some time ago, the Swiss Bankers Association set itself the goal of positioning the Swiss financial centre as a hub for the China and (offshore) renminbi business. This is why we have published the brochure entitled: ?The Swiss Financial Centre ? Ready for the Renminbi?. We are pleased that the Swiss Federal Council also identified the renminbi as an important growth segment for Switzerland in its December 2012 report on the strategy for the financial centre.

?We are certain that the Swiss financial centre, with its high volume of assets under management, its central role in international commodities trading and the importance of Switzerland as a gateway to Europe for Chinese companies and investments in China, offers favourable conditions for this emerging segment.?

U.S. airlines resume flights after Mexico volcano calms down

MEXICO CITY ? An airport official says U.S. airlines have resumed all flights to Mexico City after voluntarily cancelling several dozen because of an eruption from the nearby Popocatepetl volcano.

Mexico City International Airport information chief Richard Jimenez says United and American Airlines resumed flights Thursday night. On Friday, there were no reports of cancellations by any airline.

At least six U.S. airlines canceled 47 flights into and out of the Mexico City and Toluca airports on Thursday as the volcano spewed a mile-high plume of ash that drifted over large parts of Mexico City, 40 miles away. The volcano also spewed hot a shower of glowing hot rock around its crater.
