I've been sleeping on the floor since about 8-9th grade. I like it for some reason. It's comfy. I used to sleep with a thick comforter under the floor, but now I just sleep on top of a sorta thin comforter. I don't know, I mainly like it because if I need more space or whatever, I can just move all my blankets to the side and have more space. People say I'll mess my back up with it, but it seems the opposite for me. I don't know, for some reason I just feel better sleeping on the floor. For a few years I slept on a mattress on the floor (due to DCF calling my mother terrible for allowing me to move my mattress and bed out of my room,) and for one or so, futons, but I keep going back to just the floor and a blanket, as it's just most comfortable.

So anyone else like sleeping on the floor?

How To Properly Use Your Credit Card - Options Finance

People need all the help they can get these days when it comes to managing finances. These cards can be beneficial to consumers, but they sometimes also make a mess of one?s financial situation. Read the following tips to learn how to manage credit responsibly and what to avoid.

Individuals under 18 can rarely obtain a credit card by themselves. You might gain access to a card through an adult?s joint account. Some stores cater to teens but big companies don?t.

Interest Rate

Be careful about selecting a card with a zero percent interest rate. This can sometimes encourage individuals to overspend. Once the zero-interest period runs out, people could wind up having a large balance, with a high interest rate, that they struggle to pay off.

Know whether the payment due date on your credit card is the actual due date or a suggested one. Many times, credit card companies will have suggested due dates that can be a couple weeks before a true due date. If you have a suggested due date, find out what your actual due date is, too. This gives you a better idea of how long you have to make your payment if you are in a pinch.

When you buy with a credit card on the Internet, keep copies of your receipt. Keep this receipt so that when your monthly bill arrives, you can see that you were charged exactly the same amount as on the receipt. If it differs, file a dispute of charges with the company as soon as possible. This smart technique will serve you well and ensure that you never get overcharged for your purchases.

Fully pay off your monthly credit card charges when you receive the bill. Unless you have % interest, you will get a finance charge put on your bill when it is not paid for completely. These finance charges can make it exceptionally difficult to dig yourself out of debt, especially if you are only making the minimum payments required.

The first place you should look to for a credit card is your bank, especially if you have been doing business with them for years. They have your personal information in their files and can approve you more easily. You could also try a credit union in your area.

Credit Card Account

Don?t open a credit card account if you don?t have enough self-discipline to use the card responsibly. Some people just can?t help spending beyond their means. These individuals should not have credit cards. When they open up a credit card account, they are prone to have a terrible financial future.

Negotiate interest rates with your credit card company. A lot of the time these credit card companies will help you to lower your interest rate if you just request it. You can probably get a low APR if you have good credit and have been making all of your payments on a timely manner.

Keep your bank cards to a minimum. Keeping a large number of cards on hand serves to complicate your financial life. Also, you greatly increase the chances of getting yourself into debt.

Consider sticking with a large bank that issues cards, as they sometimes offer the best options. Their cards may come with more perks, and larger, well-established companies may have better business practices. when taking out a credit card that you plan to use a lot, go with one of the major companies. After all you are risking your credit score.

Always adhere to a budget when it comes to using charge cards. You should have a budget for your income, so include your credit in your budget. Try not to think of bank cards as a source of extra money. Set aside a budgeted amount that you are allowed to spend, and never allow yourself to put more than that on your cards. Don?t go over that amount, and pay the balance off every month.

Again, consumers often have no support as they work out how to use their credit cards properly; as a result, they often end up paying unnecessarily high interest on their purchases. Ideally, you have picked up some handy spending advice from this article and have a better idea about how to use your charge cards in a safe and responsible manner.

It?s essential that you comprehend everything you can about financial markets today. Therefore, it makes sense to conduct some research independently and keep this piece on financial markets today. When you get this knowledge, you?ll have no issues in the future.

SUVs: Big Car And Big Responsibility

SUVs are big and people bought them because of that fact. They wanted big. "It's safer!" they said. "I can see better!" And best of all it will "protect my family in a crash."

Of course for those people who ran over their own children with those SUVs? That's not due to their poor decision making, or life choices, that's the automotive industry's fault.

It's a horrible moment of neglect, but the automotive manufacturers and the public should not be the ones to shoulder the burden, sorry but no. When you choose to buy a bigger-than-needed vehicle then you choose a bigger-than-average risk. That's yours. I never chose to own an SUV, my bumper is all of a foot off the ground. I can see clearly out of my mirrors and the rear view. I also take the time to check, every day, every time I back up. There are lots of small children in my neighborhood, I even stop before I exit my own driveway just to be certain someone doesn't dart out from behind a tree, bush or on a bike.

Nothing replaces caution, no cameras, no beepers, nor warning lights. If you have two kids with you then check that they're buckled in properly before rolling into reverse. Take your time, driving, as we all know, has many dangers and rushing any part of the process isn't something industry could or should cure. That's driver responsibility. It's also something to think about next time you want something you don't really need.

NASA Unveils E-books on Hubble, Webb Space Telescopes

NASA has just released two free e-books about the Hubble Space Telescope and its not-yet-launched successor, with interactive features that let readers watch a galaxy collision or manipulate a telescope model between pages, agency officials say.

The Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990 and has a mission lifetime through at least 2013. The space-based observatory has supplied some of the most dazzling visible-light images of distant cosmic objects, which are featured in "Hubble Space Telescope: Discoveries."

The James Webb Space Telescope, which will be almost three times the size of Hubble, has been designed to work best at infrared wavelengths in order to study the very distant universe, looking for the first stars and galaxies that ever emerged. The e-book, "Webb Space Telescope: Science Guide," explains the technology behind the mission, which is slated to launch in 2018.

"These new e-books from NASA will allow people to discover Hubble and Webb in a whole new way ? both the science and the technology behind building them," Amber Straughn, an astrophysicist on the Webb telescope project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement. "They collect all of the amazing resources about these two observatories in an excellent product that I think people will really enjoy."

The e-books are available at the Apple iBookstore or can be downloaded as a PDF here: http://hubblesite.org/ibooks/

Minn. soda shop rebuked for stocking candy smokes

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Owners of an old-school soda shop in St. Paul, Minn., are being warned to kick the habit and stop stocking novelty candy cigarettes.

City inspectors threatened a misdemeanor citation and $500 fine if Lynden's soda fountain is caught selling the fake smokes again. The Star Tribune reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/RiCHiP ) that the offering violated an ordinance barring the sale of candy smokes and cartoon character lighters.

A city spokesman says the warning came after inspectors received and looked into a complaint about the presence of the tobacco-themed products. The ordinance was enacted to discourage youngsters from picking up a real smoking habit.

Shop owner Tobi Lynden says the white candy sticks with the red tips were her best-selling candy item but she pulled them to avoid running afoul of the ordinance.

Sonos Playbar appears at the FCC (update: WiFi explained)

Sonos Playbar appears at the FCC with WiFi, finally

Sonos is the de facto choice for multi-room audio, but even some of its biggest proponents will grumble about the lack of built-in WiFi -- going wireless in any way has meant tacking a Bridge on to the cost of an already expensive system. An FCC filing for an upcoming device, the Playbar, hints that common sense might have the upper hand. While there's few details of the audio system itself, there's explicit mentions of dual-band 802.11n WiFi inside. Just what that WiFi does is another matter. Sonos prefers using its proprietary network to cut back on lag and interference, so the Playbar's additional wireless may extend functionality rather than simplify our lives. With approval out of the way, there's a better chance we'll know the full story in the near future.

Update: We've done some digging, and the WiFi may be more innocuous: Sonos' proprietary network is actually WiFi that's just invisible most of the time. Android users have access to settings that expose Sonos' WiFi network and make it usable. As such, the Playbar may be more conventional than first thought, although its exact role in the home is still a mystery.

Rock Stars, Dying Early To Be Famous | Psych Central News

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 23, 2012

Rock Stars, Dying Early To Be Famous Successful solo rock and pop stars are twice as likely to die early as those in a band, according to new research.

The researchers also found that rock stars who died from drug or alcohol misuse were more likely to have had a difficult or abusive childhood.

For the study, the researchers included 1,489 North American and European rock and pop stars over a 50-year period between 1956 (Elvis Presley) and 2006 (Regina Spektor, The Arctic Monkeys, and Snow Patrol).

Their successes were determined from international polls and top 40 chart hits, while details of their personal lives and childhoods were drawn from a range of music and official websites, published biographies, and anthologies, the researchers explain.

During the 50-year period, 137 (9.2 percent) famous rock stars died. The average age of death was 45 for North American stars and 39 for those from Europe.

The gap in life expectancy between rock and pop stars and the general population widened consistently until 25 years after fame had been achieved, after which death rates began to approach those of the general population ? but only for European stars.

Solo performers were around twice as likely to die early as those in a band, whether they were European (9.8 percent solo vs 5.4 percent in a band) or North American (22.8 percent vs 10.2 percent).

The researchers speculate that the peer support offered by bandmates may be protective. In other words, the social support of friends can help alleviate the stress and loneliness of touring on the road.

While gender and the age at which fame was reached did not influence life expectancy, ethnicity did, with those from non-white backgrounds more likely to die early, according to the study.

The chances of survival increased among those achieving fame after 1980, researchers noted.

Nearly half of those who died as a result of drugs, alcohol, or violence had at least one unfavorable factor in their childhoods, compared with one in four of those dying of other causes.

Unfavorable factors included physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; living with a chronically depressed, suicidal, mentally or physically ill person; living with a substance abuser; having a close relative in prison; and coming from a broken home or one in which domestic violence occurred.

Four out of five dead stars with more than one unfavorable childhood factor died from substance misuse or violence-related causes, according to the study.

A career as a rock star may be attractive to those escaping an unhappy childhood, but it may also provide the resources to feed a predisposition to unhealthy or risky behaviors, say the researchers.

?Pop/rock stars are among the most common role models for children, and surveys suggest that growing numbers aspire to pop stardom,? they write in the study, which was published in the online journal BMJ Open.

?A proliferation of TV talent shows and new opportunities created by the Internet can make this dream appear more achievable than ever. It is important they [children] recognize that substance use and risk-taking may be rooted in childhood adversity rather than seeing them as symbols of success.?

Yemen army shells tribesmen for blocking pipeline repairs

SANAA (Reuters) - The Yemeni army launched an assault on Sunday using tanks and rockets on tribesmen blocking repairs to the country's main oil export pipeline, tribal sources said.

Earlier this month, the military launched a major offensive against tribesmen suspected of repeatedly blowing up the Maarib pipeline and attacking power lines. At least 17 soldiers were killed in an ambush by suspected al Qaeda militants.

"Armed tribesmen prevented repair teams from fixing the oil pipeline and army forces shelled the areas where the gunmen are based using tanks and Katyusha rockets," a tribal source told Reuters. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Local authorities reached a deal last week with tribal leaders under which the military will cease air strikes and the tribesmen will chase those responsible for killing the soldiers. The U.S.-allied Yemeni government depends heavily on tribesmen in its fight against Islamist militancy.

Yemen's oil and gas pipelines have repeatedly been sabotaged by insurgents or disgruntled tribesmen since anti-government protests created a power vacuum in 2011, causing fuel shortages and slashing export earnings for the impoverished country.

Yemen's stability is a priority for the United States and its Gulf Arab allies because of its strategic position next to top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and shipping lanes, and because it is home to one of the most active wings of al Qaeda.

A U.S.-backed military offensive has driven the militants out of areas they seized in the south last year but has not prevented them from launching attacks that have dealt damaging blows to the army and security apparatus.

Before the attacks, the Maarib pipeline had typically carried 110,000 barrels per day (bpd) of light crude to the Ras Isa export terminal on the Red Sea coast.

A long closure of the pipeline last year forced the country's largest refinery at Aden to shut, leaving the small producer dependent on imports and fuel donations from Saudi Arabia.

LSE trims LCH.Clearnet offer amid capital changes

(AP) ? London Stock Exchange PLC has reduced the value of its bid to buy up to 60 percent of European clearing house LCH.Clearnet to take into account new capital requirements being imposed by regulators.

The Exchange said Monday that its offer values LCH.Clearnet at a provisional ?15 ($19.83) a share, down from the March offer of around ?20 a share. The overall value of the deal was not disclosed.

It said the reduction was based on the assumption that LCH.Clearnet will have to raise ?300 million in new capital. LCH.Clearnet is currently in discussions with regulators about how much It needs to raise to shore up its capital base.

The offer for LCH.Clearnet, which clears trading deals, including risky derivatives, has been extended to the end of January.

AP source: Pirates, Red Sox near deal for Hanrahan

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The Boston Red Sox are pursuing another burly right-hander to shore up their bullpen.

A person familiar with the talks said the Red Sox and Pirates are close to completing a trade that would send All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan to Boston for a handful of prospects.

Pittsburgh would ship Hanrahan and another player to the Red Sox in exchange for four players, including outfielder-first baseman Jerry Sands and minor league pitcher Stolmy Pimentel. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the trade was pending physicals and had not been finalized.

The deal was previously reported by several media outlets.

The 31-year-old Hanrahan has been one of baseball's best closers the last two years, saving 76 games from 2011-12 and making the NL All-Star team in both seasons. He made $4,135,000 this year and is eligible for arbitration, putting him in line for a hefty raise.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Hanrahan and his 96 mph fastball gave the Pirates stability at the back end of the bullpen after he took over the closer's role full-time in 2011. He helped the Pirates post a 22-game improvement from 2010 to 2012. Pittsburgh went 79-83 this year, tied for the franchise's best record in two decades ? though it was still the team's 20th straight losing season.

Jason Grilli, re-signed by the Pirates this month, would likely step into the closer role next year.

The Red Sox hope Hanrahan will be able to give their beleaguered bullpen an identity. Boston slumped to a 69-93 record in 2012 thanks in part to a bullpen that struggled after closer Jonathan Papelbon left for Philadelphia in free agency. Fill-in Alfredo Aceves went 2-10 with a 5.36 ERA and eight blown saves in 33 chances as the Red Sox finished last in the AL East.

Hanrahan would team with 28-year-old righty Andrew Bailey to give the Red Sox a potent 1-2 punch in the late innings. Bailey was expected to be the closer last season but he missed most of the year with an injury. He finished 1-1 with six saves and a 7.04 ERA in 19 games for the Red Sox after spending 2009-11 as the closer in Oakland.

The move could also be a one-year experiment if the Red Sox don't sign Hanrahan to a new contract. He can become a free agent after the 2013 season.

The Pirates would get a potential slugger in the 25-year-old Sands, who hit 296 with 26 home runs and 107 RBIs at Triple-A last season. He came to the Red Sox in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers and his bat and versatility could make Pittsburgh first baseman-outfielder Garrett Jones expendable. Jones hit a career-high 27 home runs in 2012, when he made $2.25 million, and he will be eligible for arbitration after next season. The Pirates already have a first baseman in place in Gaby Sanchez, who came over in a trade with the Miami Marlins last season.

The proposed trade caps a busy few days for the Pirates, who have agreed in principal to sign former Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox left-hander Francisco Liriano. The $14 million, two-year deal is pending a physical.

Liriano would give Pittsburgh four experienced starters heading into 2013, joining A.J. Burnett, Wandy Rodriguez and James McDonald. The 29-year-old Liriano is 53-54 with a 4.40 ERA in seven major league seasons. He went 6-12 with a 5.34 ERA in 2012 while splitting the season between the Twins and White Sox.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tropicana wants more people to drink its juice, so it's extending a carrot ? and a bushel of other vegetables.

As sugar-conscious Americans continue to shy away from fruit juices, Tropicana is using vegetables for the first time in recent history with a new drink called "Farmstand" set to hit shelves next month. By marketing the juice as a way for moms to sneak some veggies into their kids' diets, the division of PepsiCo Inc. is betting that carrots and beets can give it a new avenue for growth.

The foray into the fruit-and-vegetable category comes after Tropicana executives watched Campbell Soup find success with V-8 V-Fusion drinks, which uncovered a sweet spot by making vegetables more palatable by mixing them with fruit. Since its rollout in 2006, Campbell has grown V-Fusion sales with multiple new flavors and varieties.

But Tropicana executives say Farmstand's potential is far greater because it will be sold in the refrigerated sections of supermarkets. Shelf-stable juices such as V-Fusion, by contrast, are exposed to higher temperatures in the pasteurization process so they don't have to be kept chilled.

Although the nutritional benefits don't differ, Tropicana's chief marketing officer Memo Maquivar said the refrigerated aspect of Farmstand will be a critical differentiator.

"Chilled is very important ? it signals high quality, it signals premium, it signals freshness," he said.

The rollout of Tropicana Farmstand comes as consumption of pure fruit juice has declined 6 percent over the past five years, according to the market research firm Euromonitor International. And Tropicana's share of the category is down to 16 percent from 21 percent five years ago.

Now Tropicana is betting on Farmstand, its biggest product launch since the rollout of Trop50 in 2009. That drink has about half the calories of regular orange juice and is targeted toward people who are watching their weight.

By contrast, Farmstand's calories are roughly the same as that of regular orange juice; an 8-ounce glass has about 120 calories and 28 grams of sugar. Since Farmstand is primarily targeting moms who want to get their kids to eat some vegetables, Maquivar says those stats shouldn't be a concern.

The juice will be available at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. later this month before expanding to supermarkets and other retailers early next year. In the first half of 2013, Tropicana plans to spend between $20 million and $30 million on advertising for Farmstand, with tag lines such as "Turn Your Kids Into Veggie Lovers."

As integral as the promise of vegetables may be to its success, however, Tropicana is being careful not to play up the beets and carrots too much. Jeff Miller, a senior marketing manager for Tropicana, said consumer surveys showed moms didn't want to be caught by their kids serving hidden vegetables.

So the first three Farmstand flavors emphasize the fruit content ? strawberry banana, peach mango and pomegranate blueberry. The bottles prominently feature images of fruit, while the vegetables are tucked behind the logo.

As for the taste, it took about eight months to come up with the right blend of juices that "hide the vegetables as much as possible," said Kathy Timperman, product development manager at PepsiCo Inc.

Early on, Timperman said Tropicana tested a variety of vegetables, including cucumbers, zucchinis, tomatoes and purple carrots. She noted those could still turn up in future flavors but that the company is sticking with beets, sweet potatoes and yellow and orange carrots for now.

Tropicana Farmstand will also have a thinner consistency more akin to regular orange juice, unlike the thicker, premium fruit-and-vegetable juices such as Naked and Bolthouse Farms, which are marketed to health-conscious adults on the go.

But as hard as Tropicana worked to make Farmstand taste like regular juice, Timperman said most people will still find it to be "a little bit of a different experience."

First Road Map of Human Sex-Cell Development

stem cell picture Researchers have uncovered some of the steps that enable human stem cells to develop into egg cells. Image: Clouds Hill Imaging Ltd./Corbis

The causes of infertility, which affects around 10% of couples, are often unknown, but may in some cases result from the body's inability to produce viable gametes ? also known as sperm and egg cells. The first study of the development of such 'germ cells' from humans could help scientists to learn how to create them in the laboratory instead.

Even though the reproductive age for humans is around 15?45 years old, the precursor cells that go on to produce human eggs or sperm are formed much earlier, when the fertilized egg grows into a tiny ball of cells in the mother?s womb. This ball of cells contains ?pluripotent stem cells? ? blank slates that can be programed into any type of cell in the body ? and researchers are hoping to use these stem cells to treat various conditions, including infertility.

But little is known about the early developmental stages of human gametes ? owing to the sensitivity of working with human tissue ? and most work in this area has been conducted using mice. In a Nature Cell Biology paper today, researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, trace the development of early germ cells in human fetuses of between 6 to 20 weeks and analyzed when genes were turned on or off.

The DNA within these early germ cells carries 'epigenetic modifications' ? structural changes that do not affect the DNA sequence itself but do affect the way that genes are expressed. These changes may have accumulated during the parents? lives, and need to be erased during the fetal stage. The study found two major events that wipe out, or reprogram, epigenetic modifications. Most of this reprograming happened before 6 weeks, but the authors found a second event that completes the reprograming after 6 weeks.

?This is an important and fundamental paper for understanding human germ-line cells and finding the basic information about human germ-cell biology,? says reproductive biologist Evelyn Telfer of the University of Edinburgh, UK. ?The researchers are clearly working in an uncharted area.?

The Los Angeles team worked with anonymized samples from aborted fetuses (after consent) from the University of Washington's Birth Defects Research Laboratory in Seattle.

The researchers also observed that 6-week-old germ cells created in the lab do not match a 6-week-old human germ cell, suggesting that there is a blockage in the development of lab cells that scientists are failing to understand.

?Next, we need to look at what is missing to coax immature germ cells to become eggs or sperm in the lab. If we have no road map to follow, then we are just guessing. Now we have a snapshot of what these cells should look like, we can start to try and mimic them,? says study co-author Amander Clark.

Instagram lays framework for monetization, sharing info with Facebook in ToS update

Facebook and Instagram will be able to get a bit cozier under that new shared roof beginning early next year. On January 16th, the photo sharing site's new Terms of Service will go into effect, enabling the network to share information, content and usage stats with "businesses that are legally part of the same group of companies that Instagram is part of, or that become part of the same group." In a blog post, Instagram reps outlined the benefits of the revision, explaining that the site will be able to "fight spam more effectively, detect system and reliability problems more quickly, and build better features for everyone by understanding how Instagram is used."

Additionally, in the full ToS, the second item under Rights states "you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you." In short, Instagram has the right to share content that's already public with advertisers in order to generate revenue. If you're an Instagram user and you care about your rights while using the service, you'll be best served by making your way over to our source links below.

Perceived stress may predict future coronary heart disease risk

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Are you stressed? Results of a new meta-analysis of six studies involving nearly 120,000 people indicate that the answer to that question may help predict one's risk of incident coronary heart disease (CHD) or death from CHD. The study, led by Columbia University Medical Center researchers, was published in a recent issue of the American Journal of Cardiology.

The six studies included in the analysis were large prospective observational cohort studies in which participants were asked about their perceived stress (e.g., "How stressed do you feel?" or "How often are you stressed?"). Respondents scored either high or low; researchers then followed them for an average of 14 years to compare the number of heart attacks and CHD deaths between the two groups. Results demonstrate that high perceived stress is associated with a 27% increased risk for incident CHD (defined as a new diagnosis or hospitalization) or CHD mortality.

"While it is generally accepted that stress is related to heart disease, this is the first meta-analytic review of the association of perceived stress and incident CHD," said senior author Donald Edmondson, PhD, assistant professor of behavioral medicine at CUMC. "This is the most precise estimate of that relationship, and it gives credence to the widely held belief that general stress is related to heart health. In comparison with traditional cardiovascular risk factors, high stress provides a moderate increase in the risk of CHD -- e.g., the equivalent of a 50 mg/dL increase in LDL cholesterol, a 2.7/1.4 mmHg increase in blood pressure or smoking five more cigarettes per day."

"These findings are significant because they are applicable to nearly everyone," said first author Safiya Richardson, MD, who collaborated with Dr. Edmondson on the paper while attending the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (she graduated in 2012 and is currently a resident at North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in Manhasset, New York). "The key takeaway is that how people feel is important for their heart health, so anything they can do to reduce stress may improve their heart health in the future."

Coronary heart disease (CHD), also called coronary artery disease, is a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. It is caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can lead to hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. CHD is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women; more than 385,000 people die each year from CHD.

The researchers did further analysis to try to learn what might underlie the association between stress and CHD. They found that while gender was not a significant factor, age was. The people in the studies were between the ages of 43-74; among older people, the relationship between stress and CHD was stronger.

"While we do not know for certain why there appears to be an association between age and the effect of perceived stress on CHD, we think that stress may be compounding over time. For example, someone who reports high perceived stress at age 60 may also have felt high stress at ages 40 and 50, as well." Dr. Edmondson also noted that older individuals tend to have worse CHD risk factors such as hypertension to begin with, and that stress may interact with those risk factors to produce CHD events.

"The next step is to conduct randomized trials to assess whether broad population-based measures to decrease stress are cost-effective. Further research should look at whether the stress that people report is about actual life circumstances (e.g., moving or caregiving), or about stable personality characteristics (e.g., type A vs. B), said Dr. Edmondson.

"We also need to ask why we found this association between stress and CHD, e.g., what biological components or mechanisms are involved, and what is the role of environment or lifestyle (e.g., diet, alcohol and drug use, exercise), and how best to moderate these factors to lower the risk of CHD," said Dr. Richardson.

The paper is titled, "Meta-Analysis of Perceived Stress and Its Association With Incident Coronary Heart Disease." The other contributors are Jonathan A. Shaffer, Louise Falzon, David Krupka and Karina W. Davidson, all from CUMC's Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health.

Health and Fitness Talk ? Snoring - oyemgice's posterous

by Kimberly Allen, RN

Snoring, that irritating noise that keeps people up, sends some to the?couch and others to the guest room, occurs when your airway narrows?interfering with the air that is passing through as you breathe. Men?snore more often than women, studies indicate 45% of men snore, while?30% of women snore.? Some people snore on a regular basis while others?only snore at certain times like after a viral infection or drinking?alcohol, even certain medications can cause you to snore.? Also,?studies indicate that people that are over weight or obese are?significantly more prone to snoring.

As we breathe the air moves in and out from our nose and mouth to our?lungs in a steady stream that makes almost no sound when we are at?rest.? Then when we exercise we produce more sound because the air is?moving faster.? In some people when they leep the passage way in the?back of the throat narrows.? So when the same amount of air tries to?pass through the narrowed space the tissue that surrounds the opening?begins to vibrate creating the sounds known as snoring.

Though snnoring is generally thought of as a minor affliction, the?snorer can suffer from an underlying condition and most also will?suffer some degree of impairment in their everyday life like sleep?deprivation.? Snoring is a known cause of sleep deprivation, not only?to the person snoring but the people around them.? Sleep deprivation?then leads to other problems like daytime drowsiness, inability to?concentrate and focus and irritability.? There have also been several?studies that indicate there is a link between loud snoring and a 34%?increased risk of heart attack as well as a 67% increased risk of?suffering a stroke.? There have also been recent studies that have?associated loud snoring with carotid artery atherosclerosis and the?risk of brain damage.

Snoring has also been associated with?obstructive sleep apnea.?Obstructive sleep apnea can be a serious health condition.? People?that suffer from obstructive sleep apnea experience episodes when?their breathing either significantly slows or stops completely for?short periods at least 5 times every hour when sleeping.? Some people?have anatomical issues that contribute to snoring like a low, soft,?thick palate or an elongated uvula, which is the triangular piece of?tissue that is hanging in the back of your throat, can obstruct?airflow increasing the vibrations and sound.? Nasal problems like a?deviated septum, which means the partition that separates your?nostrils is crooked can obstruct air flow and cause snoring.? Some?people are born with a deviated septum while others suffer some type?of injury to their nnose caussing the partition to move.? Even chronic?nasal congestion can impair air flow and lead to snoring.

Treatment of snoring depends on the cause.? Your Dr will need to take?a complete history and do a physical exam to rule out more serious?conditions.? For example with primary snnoring issues most Drs?recommend starting with lifestyle changes.? If you are over weight the?Dr will recommend losing weight.? Avoid consuming alcohol near bedtime?and many improve their snoring by sleeping on their side instead of?their back.? There are now oral appliances available that help to keep?your airway open.? It?s important to visit your dentist regularly to
have your appliance checked to be sure the fit is correct.? There are?also surgical options available for people with anatomical issues that?do not improve with non surgical intervention.

Snoring is a common issue in many homes and though it is usually more?of a nuisance that a serious health risk if you or someone you know?snores loudly and regularly see your Dr.? Your Dr can determined if?you have a more serious underlying condition like obstructive sleep?apnea.

Obama to travel to Newtown, Conn. on Sunday

(Reuters/Larry Downing)(Reuters/Larry Downing)

President Barack Obama will travel to Newtown, Conn., on Sunday to meet with families of those killed in the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School and thank emergency workers who responded to the tragedy, the White House said Saturday.

"The president will also speak at an interfaith vigil" at 7 p.m., press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.

On Friday, an emotional Obama vowed to "take meaningful action, regardless of the politics," to prevent future tragedies like the shooting massacre, which killed 26 people at the school, 20 of them children.

"Our hearts are broken today," Obama said in a brief statement at the White House briefing room, frequently pausing to wipe tears from his eyes. "The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams."
