Michael Jacques Sentenced To 14 Years For Burning Black Church After Obama Election

The hate crime which Michael Jacques committed against the Macedonia Church of God in Christ stung not only the Springfield, Mass. region, but indeed the nation. Having been raised in Western Massachusetts, it stung me as well,? Richard DesLauriers, Special Agent in Charge of the Boston FBI, said in a statement.

The church was rebuilt with help from volunteers and supporters from around the country and opened for services this summer.

After being implicated in the arson by Benjamin Haskell, one of his accomplices, Jacques was brought in for questioning by the Massachusetts State Police and admitted his involvement in the crime after a six-hour interrogation. Before his trial in April, Jacques told a federal judge he was pressured into a false confession while suffering withdrawal from painkillers and nicotine. The judge ruled that the confession was admissible.

Haskell told police that Jacques ?was angry that the country was going to have an African American president and that the blacks and Puerto Ricans would now have more rights than whites,? according to court documents.

After a three-week trial, Jacques was convicted of numerous federal civil rights charges, including destruction of religious property and conspiracy against civil rights. In addition to serving almost 14 years in federal prison, followed by four years of supervised released, he must pay nearly $1.6 million in restitution.

?This sentence sends a powerful message that racial violence and intimidation have no place in our society,? Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez said in a statement.

Former football players sue NFL for brain damage

Twenty one former football players are suing the NFL for brain damage they allege is linked to concussions suffered during their NFL tenure.

The complaint, filed Thursday in Miami, follows a similar one filed this week in Atlanta.

The recent lawsuit was filed by former Miami Dolphins players Patrick Surtain, Oronde Gadsden and 19 others. They accuse the NFL of hiding evidence linking the concussions to long-term neurological problems.

The NFL denies the claims and said that player safety has always taken top priority.

The suit also stated that the NFL created a research committee to study concussions in 1994. Several NFL members were affiliated with the committee, even though it was supposed to be independent. The committee also did not have a doctor that specialized in neurology.

Its findings were published in 2003. They stated that there were no long term health consequences linked to concussions.
The former players have asked for a jury trial and unspecified damages.

Another player to file suit against the NFL for concussions was two-time Super Bowl champion Jim McMahon, who sued the league in August.

McMahon claimed that he sustained five concussions. He says he now walks often in a daze and forgets why he entered a room.

His suits seeks class-action status and includes anyone who has suffered a concussion or head injury while playing in the NFL.

Finally, the conversation changes.

It's time for the NBA to ditch the dollars and nonsense of the lockout for the alleys and oops in Lob City, the new nickname for the suddenly exciting Los Angeles Clippers.

For months, all the talk was about lockouts, salary caps and mediation. Now there are games that count as a new season begins Christmas Day.

For all practical purposes, Clippers fans have been locked out of competitive basketball for the better part of three decades. Now they get entertainment of the highest order ? watching Blake Griffin throw down lob passes from Chris Paul.

The 2011-12 season, shortened to 66 games, debuts Sunday when five marquee games will be played from morning deep into the night. This marks a first step for the league as it looks to bury a damaging offseason marred by a five-month labor dispute and several stars trying to force their way out of town.

The day begins with Boston and New York and then goes to an NBA Finals rematch with Miami at Dallas. Next up is Chicago at the Lakers, followed by the small-market special ? Orlando at Oklahoma City ? before CP3 makes his regular-season debut as a Clipper at Golden State in the nightcap.

"The lockout was hectic for everybody," Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley said. "We were bored! Now we feel like we've got a purpose in life. We can do what we do best."

It's time.

It's time for Derek Fisher to be seen in Lakers gold, not Brooks Brothers gray.

It's time for postgame news conferences with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, not post-meeting sessions with David Stern and Adam Silver.

It's time for Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks to defend their title on the court, not for Jeffrey Kessler and the players' union to defend their decision to disband in the courts.

"I don't even want to talk about the lockout any more, man!" Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant said. "It was just so frustrating to go through that and everything that went on, us meeting and not meeting and not coming to an agreement and fans getting upset with us. It was tough. But I'm glad we got through it."

It didn't look so good for a while. Once the dispute was finally settled, a whole new drama broke out with Paul and Dwight Howard looking for trades out of New Orleans and Orlando.

Howard eventually softened his stance, but his future is still the focus in Orlando.

"I don't think our situation is going to go away," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "But I think it'll be a lot more focused on the games than there has been (focus) on the lockout."

The Lakers thought they had a deal for Paul, but Stern, acting as the owner of the Hornets, nixed that, and another crisis was born. The Clippers swooped in at the end, seizing some of the spotlight from Kobe and the Lakers for the first time since, well, ever.

"Hey, that's got to be driving Kobe," Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "That should drive (Pau) Gasol and (Andrew) Bynum and those guys and Derek Fisher to say, 'Hey, no way I'm going to let them take over Los Angeles.'"

The two teams met twice in the preseason, and the rivalry quickly escalated. Bryant injured his wrist on a hard foul in the first game and Lakers agitator Matt Barnes shoved Griffin to the court in the second game.

That wasn't the only miniseries infused with more intensity and energy than any exhibition game in recent years.

The Timberwolves were buoyant after finishing their second game against the Bucks with a 12-0 run to finish the preseason 2-0. James and Quentin Richardson were seen trading shoulder blocks all the way down the floor in Miami's preseason finale against Orlando.

"That's our sanctuary. When we get out between the lines and we're playing, that's all that matters," Richardson said. "And that's definitely our escape from anything going on, or anything negative or anything like that."

The melodrama surrounding Paul's request to be traded from New Orleans could have ripple effects throughout the Western Conference. The Lakers have been grousing since losing out on Paul and sending Lamar Odom to Dallas, but they weren't the only team hurt by that decision.

The Rockets had agreed to send Kevin Martin and Luis Scola to the Hornets as part of a three-team deal that would have landed them Gasol. Instead, they had to abandon any designs on signing Nene, go with Sam Dalembert in the middle and do some serious damage control with Scola and Martin.

While all the drama was unfolding, the Thunder have been playing the role of the young, hungry contender, ferociously working while no one was watching and preparing to throw nothing but haymakers as soon as the bell rings.

The Heat are back for another run at the title. James, Wade and Chris Bosh had the whole league against them after a presumptuous welcome ceremony on South Beach. But the spotlight hasn't been quite as bright while everyone has been looking toward the Clippers and Magic, where Howard's wishes seem to change by the day.

"It's good to see other guys around the league get that attention," Wade said. "I think they got enough of us last year. It's good to see other teams, other franchises, get that spotlight for a while. Hope they enjoy it."

The fan hunger is there as well. The Clippers sold out their game against the Lakers, and the first in that series was the most viewed preseason game in NBATV history.

The Timberwolves had 15,000 people attend their home preseason game against the Bucks, and another 2,500 turned out for a free practice on a Monday afternoon just to get a glimpse of Ricky Rubio.

More than 10,000 fans watched a free practice with the New York Knicks, and the Thunder's rabid fan base packed the arena for Durant's return to the court.

"We had to sacrifice a little bit of time and there were some harsh words thrown our way, but at the end of the day, everybody got what they wanted, which was basketball," Durant said. "That's what we worked hard for, is to play the game of basketball. We had to work the business part out and now we're just back to basketball."

Let the games begin.

3rd student pleads guilty in Columbia drug case (AP)

NEW YORK ? A Columbia University student accused of selling a prescription stimulant as part of a campus drug-dealing ring pleaded guilty Tuesday in an agreement that may spare him jail time and a felony record.

Jose Stephan Perez, a published poet who held a prestigious scholarship when he and four fellow students were arrested last year, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony attempted drug possession charge. He'll be allowed to withdraw that plea and plead guilty to a drug misdemeanor in a year if he performs 300 hours of community service, passes monthly drug tests and avoids getting arrested again.

His lawyer, Peter M. Frankel, said the plea was "the appropriate outcome."

Meanwhile, another student in the case, Christopher Coles, was jailed without bail Tuesday after authorities said he'd failed a drug test.

Perez, 21, who also is known as Stephan Vincenzo, was charged mainly with selling Adderall, a prescription amphetamine sometimes coveted as a study aid. The city Special Narcotics Prosecutor's office said he sometimes did deals in the campus library and was part of a loose-knit but prolific group of students who sold drugs ranging from marijuana to LSD-spiked candy from dorm rooms and fraternity houses.

Frankel painted a portrait in court papers of a young man who set his sights on going to Columbia at 13 and strove to get the grades and financial aid to realize his dream ? snagging a spot as one of the 1,000 Gates Millennium Scholars named nationwide each year ? but was battered by social pressures as soon as he got to campus. Eager to jump-start a social life, Perez invited the entire freshman class online to a social event, a gesture that moved some students to scorn him on blogs and mock him in a campus show, Frankel wrote in a filing earlier this year.

Although Perez joined a fraternity, worked a campus job and got involved in various Latino student groups and other activities, he also began smoking marijuana as many as five times a day, a habit he financed by selling Adderall he'd been prescribed, his lawyer wrote.

Since his arrest, Perez has been in counseling, has spoken about his experience to students at his former high school in Marietta, Ga., and has taught younger students in the Bahamas, where his mother works as a marine biologist, his lawyer said.

Columbia has declined to comment on the students' current status. The Gates Millennium Scholars program has deferred his scholarship, a spokeswoman said.

Perez was the third to plead guilty among five students arrested in the case, which authorities described as one of the biggest crackdowns on college drug dealing in the city in recent memory. It prompted examinations of the undercurrent of drugs in college life in media outlets including Time magazine's website.

The engineering student who faced the most serious charges, Harrison David, served a six-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to a cocaine charge. Michael Wymbs, an engineering major initially charged with selling LSD and Ecstasy, pleaded guilty last month to attempted drug possession and was promised five years' probation.

The student who was jailed Tuesday, anthropology major Christopher Coles, remains on track to resolve his case by spending at least a year living in a drug-abuse treatment center. He was charged with selling as much as a pound of marijuana; his lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, said the student was selling the drug to finance a $70-to-$100-a-day pot-smoking habit. A judge agreed to give Coles what's known as diversion to treatment, an opportunity extended to more than 1,000 people statewide each year.

Agnifilo didn't immediately return a call after court Tuesday. Coles and the fifth student, Adam Klein, have pleaded not guilty.

Three off-campus suppliers charged in the case have pleaded guilty to drug charges.

Facebook Sponsored Story Ads To Appear In The Web News Feed In 2012

Sponsored Story in News Feed 2012Starting in January 2012, Facebook will gradually begin showing Sponsored Stories social ads in the main news feed of the web version of the site, a representative of the company tells us. Facebook has never shown ads in the news feed before, so this has big ramifications for advertisers and the user experience. The ads will be marked "Sponsored" and a rate limit will ensure users see no more than 1 Sponsored Story in the news feed per day. They'll only feature stories about friends or Pages that users already like. Users won't be able to opt out of seeing Sponsored Stories in the news feed or having their activity used in them, but they will be able to 'x' out individual ads. The ads won't immediately appear in the mobile news feed, though Facebook is considering the idea as we discussed earlier this month.

Changes to the brain in patients with spinal cord compression identified

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? Research from The University of Western Ontario is now looking beyond spinal cord injuries in patients to better understand what is happening in the brain.

While spinal degeneration is an unavoidable part of aging, for some it leads to compression of the spinal cord, which can cause problems with dexterity, numbness in the hands, the ability to walk and, in some cases, bladder and bowel function. But research by Robert Bartha, Neil Duggal and Izabela Kowalczyk found patients with spinal cord compression also had changes in the motor cortex of the brain.

Their findings are published in the journal Brain.

"When patients undergo surgery for spinal cord compression, some improve, some stay static and some continue to get worse. We're trying to understand which patients we can actually help and which patients will have limited benefit from surgery," explains Duggal of the study involving 11 healthy controls and 24 patients with reversible spinal cord compression.

As associate professor in the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and a neurosurgeon with London Health Sciences Centre, Duggal says he's looking not only at the mechanisms of the spinal cord, but also, what's happening in the brain and how it responds to injury in the spinal cord, and whether there is any plasticity or ability in the brain to compensate for injury.

Bartha, an imaging scientist with Schulich's Robarts Research Institute and an associate professor in the Department of Medical Biophysics, and Kowalczyk, a PhD candidate, had the study participants do a simple motor task -- tapping their fingers -- while undergoing a 3 Tesla functional MRI scan.

This test identified the parts of the brain that were involved in performing this movement, which is often impaired in patients with spinal cord compression. Once the area was localized, they examined it using proton-magnetic resonance spectroscopy to look at a range of different chemicals or metabolites such as neurotransmitters and amino acids. The goal was to determine whether the levels of these chemicals were any different in the subjects with spinal cord compression.

"Surprisingly, we saw a 15 per cent decrease in the level of N-acetylaspartate to creatine in those with spinal cord compression," says Bartha. "This is really interesting because N-acetylaspartate is an amino acid that goes down when you have neuronal injury or when neurons are dying. I wasn't expecting to see such a large change in the brain from spinal cord compression."

The researchers are still trying to untangle whether this change is something that occurs over time, with the injury from the spinal cord propagating back into the brain. This finding has implications for whether or not the condition is reversible, and who may benefit from surgical procedures. The next step, currently underway, is to study whether metabolic levels in the brain change after surgery.

The research was funded by the Physicians Services Incorporated Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Kowalczyk also received support from the Lawson Health Research Institute Studentship.

OLPC XO 1.75 pops up at the FCC

Last time we saw the OLPC XO 1.75, it had its guts exposed for all to see on the CES show floor. This time around, it's being poked and prodded by Uncle Sam at the Federal Communications Commission. There are no photos of the newest OLPC to be found, but unless things have changed, it'll sport the same Celtics colors as its brethren on the outside and a Marvell ARM CPU underneath. As is often the case, additional details about this little laptop are few and far between in the FCC's documents, but feel free to hit the source to get your fill of radiation reports and performance charts.

Ann Brenoff: Baby Names: What They Say About Our Times

My son played on a Little League team last year with Declan, Kennesaw, Tristan and Hunter. My daughter has twin classmates named Bohdi and Kai (they act on FX's "American Horror Story") and she has so many friends named Sara that we've taken to numbering them in conversation as in, "Mom, can I sleep at Sara #2's?"

I am the child of a Sam and Esther and niece of a Sylvia, Faye, Sophie, Nellie and Hy. See where I'm going with this?

I've long been a student of baby-naming conventions and what they say about our times. Do you know any Ronalds or Harolds under 40? Or any Taras over it?

What we name our children speaks a lot more about where we are emotionally at the time than where they may be headed in the future, and therein lies the problem. I'm sure Moon Unit or Dweezil Zappa would agree, as might their sister, Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. I know plenty of Jerrys and Janises named after Garcia and Joplin, respectively -- and not one of them has a musical bone in their body.

We bestow names with many considerations in mind -- our history, to honor a loved one, great figures we admire in literature -- but I suspect not many consider how our children will age with the names we give them. I still giggle at the idea of a nursing home filled with Tiffanys instead of Sadies and Shirleys. (But fortunately, since Tiffany hasn't been on a top 20 name list since the early 1980s, I don't think I'll be around long enough to see it happen.)

But names are important. First, they must be able to withstand not just the third-grade playground test (my heart breaks for all the Buckleys who must die a little each time a new kid "discovers" that with the change of just one letter, young Buck gets propelled into the no-fly zone), but names also must hold up to the test of time.

And as best as I can determine, one name has done just that: World, meet William -- although you likely already know a dozen of them.

Lots of blogsites keep track of what the most popular names are for any calendar year, but I'm turning to the Social Security Administration as the official record-keeper.

According to the Social Security Administration, the most popular baby names for 2010 for boys are: Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Jayden, William, Alexander, Noah, Daniel, Aiden and Anthony; and for girls: Isabella, Sophia, Emma, Olivia, Ava, Emily, Abigail, Madison, Chloe and Mia.

Take a look at the list of most-popular names for 1950, my birth year: Top 10 boys names were , Robert, John, Michael, David, William, Richard, Thomas, Charles, Gary, Larry; Top 10 girls names were Linda, Mary, Patricia, Barbara, Susan, Nancy, Deborah, Sandra, Carol, and Kathleen.

William has been around forever, appearing back in 1925 and then still holding his own in 2010. For all I know, he's been on every list in between and then some. The name, of Germanic origins, means protector of the realm or kingdom. How interesting, then, that we have no William running for president. (Anyone hoping for a Bill Clinton comeback?)

William even has a website devoted to all things William, which is where I was able to glean that it was a William who invented the baby carriage (1733, English architect William Kent for the 3rd Duke of Devonshire's children) and another William improved it a century and a half later (William H. Richardson patented an improvement to the baby carriage in the United States on June, 18, 1889.) We have a Prince William, better known as Kate Middleton's husband, and we have a William (Mitchell) who invented Pop Rocks, the Boomer candy-of-choice (circa 1956) that exploded in your mouth. Bill Coors developed the first all-aluminum beverage can and William Mark Felt was the Watergate scandal whistleblower better known to the world as "Deep Throat" -- two men, two separate events that while not exactly linked, both ultimately shaping this writer's life.

As for baby-naming on a wider scale, I'd draw your attention to a 13-pound baby born in Germany in November. His name: Jihad.
