Brand New Details On The Cardplaying Chessmaster Who Bagged JPMorgan's London Whale

Today's New York Times has a lengthy story, detailing the trader who helped bag JP Morgan's "London Whale."

If you don't know, JP Morgan recently announced that it had lost around $2 billion on some bad credit trades.? Reports surfaced that one of the players on the other side of those trades was legendary credit trader Boaz Weinstein.

The New York Times Azam Ahmed offers a lot of details on Weinstein's personal life and professional career. Some of which we knew; some we didn't.

Here's a round up of what was written about him:

• He grew up in Manhattan's Upper West Side.
• He earned the title of chess master when he was 16.? At a recent auction, he paid $10,500 to play chess with legend Garry Kasparov.? He plays online games with Silicon Valley venture capitalist Peter Thiel.
• He won a stock-picking competition as a student in New York's prestigious Stuyvesant High School.
• When he was 18, he failed to land a job at Goldman Sachs.? But then he was able to get more interviews after playing chess with a senior partner, whom he ran into at a bathroom.
• He studied philosophy at the University of Michigan.
• As a credit trader at Deutsche Bank, Weinstein booked profits in 10 out of 11 years
• In his heyday, he booked around $40 million in profits each year.
• He earned the title of managing director at age 27.? At the time, he was the youngest MD in Deutsche Bank history.
• During the height of the financial crisis, his team had lost around $2 billion.
• In 2005, he won a Maserarti at a poker tournament sponsored by a unit of Berkshire Hathaway.? He still drives it.
• He's banned from Las Vegas' Bellagio casino for counting cards at blackjack.
• His hedge fund Saba Capital, has $5.5 billion under management and his offices are located on the 58th floor of New York City's Chrysler Building.
• His wife, Tali Farhadian Weinstein, is a lawyer with the Justice Department.
• In the hedge fund industry, Weinstein is known as a 'monster,' an unusually aggressive trader.
• He's currently in talks to buy a $24 million apartment on Fifth Avenue.

Federal crop insurance is an important risk management tool for farmers throughout the United States, and an expanded federal crop insurance program may replace many of the traditional ?safety net? farm programs that are of great economic significance to agricultural producers in the southeastern U.S.

As such, federal crop insurance appears to have emerged as a mainstay of farm risk management and future farm policy for directly affecting agricultural producers. Once a loss occurs, farmers may have difficulty navigating the claims process, especially given some of the complexities associated with crop insurance policies.

The National Agricultural Law Center has published an article, Filing a Crop Insurance Claim: An Overview for Producers, that provides information on some of the legal and other issues a producer should consider in handling a loss claim under the federal crop insurance program. The article is authored by Grant Ballard, National Agricultural Law Research Center Research Consultant and associate with the Banks Law Firm, PLLC.

BETHESDA, MD, May 17, 2012 ? Northwest Biotherapeutics (OTC.BB: NWBO) (NW Bio) announced today that it now has 41 clinical trial sites open and recruiting across the United States in its ongoing clinical trial of DCVax?-L immune therapy for Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most lethal form of brain cancer. This is ahead of the Company?s previous projection of 40 sites by the end of Q2, 2012. The Company plans to continue adding clinical trial sites in the US and Europe, and expects to have at least 60 sites open and enrolling by the end of Q3, 2012.

The Company also announced that the FDA has accepted an amendment of the clinical trial, which does not make any change in the treatment regimen, which leaves all data collected to date intact for use in the trial?s overall results, and which includes the following:

- Designation as a Phase III trial

- Expanded and enhanced statistical endpoint analyses

- Addition of another cohort of patients which can potentially expand the application of DCVax?-L, and which increases the trial to up to 300 patients

- Addition of interim analyses for efficacy

A description of the trial protocol as amended will be available at www.clinicaltrials.gov.

Kyocera announces the Hydro and Rise Ice Cream Sandwich handsets

Kyocera has brought two new handsets to CTIA, the Hydro and the Rise, and they're letting them out of the bag this morning. Both phones are decidedly entry level, use the latest technology to enhance voice call sounds, and run Ice Cream Sandwich. The Hydro is a 3.5-inch HVGA with an MSM8655 Snapdragon at 1 GHz, and 512 MB of RAM. It's also waterproof at 1 meter for 30 minutes, because according to Kyocera "70% of users polled said that water resistance is an important feature in their next phones." We can't argue there, we've all seen horror stories about water and smartphones.

The Rise shares the same specs (and overall basic design) with a four-row horizontal sliding QWERTY keyboard instead of the water proof design. Again Kyocera tells us why, saying that "69 percent of consumers say QWERTY keyboards are a must-have or nice-to-have feature in their next mobile phones." A statistic that I can get behind, but I'm thinking most readers on the Internet will disagree with. 

Possibly the most interesting specification is the "Tissue Conduction" audio technology. Originally designed for hearing aid devices, the tech uses a piezoelectric transducer that transmits sound through air as sound waves, and through soft tissue as vibrations. This "delivers dramatically improved hearing in noisy environments" according to Kyocera. You'll simply place any portion of the "A-cover" over the outer ear and ambient noise is cut and the transducer splits the signal to transmit on both paths. It's a really interesting concept, and one we can't wait to try.

There's no word on carrier, release dates, or prices, but both phones are equipped with EVDO radios and should appear later this year on Sprint or Verizon. Given Sprint's relation with Kyocera, my money is on the Now Network. See the full specifications for both after the break.
